Hello all ,
Im new here , and have a problem that I cant get around .A few years ago maybe 5ish I bought a Bk2 thinking it was the answer . but noticed the blade was not a 1/4 thick and after I put on the micarta scales it didnt fit the same in the sheath (kinda loose) so i bought the RSK MK2 thinking it was what i was looking for ....much thinner ...not the one ....so now im looking at the new BK2 s and cant quite pull the trigger any advise would be great .does that 0.042s make a huge diffrence in performance ?
Thanks

Ok maybe thats a bit vague even for me .....
My current BK2 is a Camillus comming in at 0.208s and I want to convex it but ........ i might just buy the K-bar instead cus its 0.250 thick and I like the hammering extruision from the grips but ...............I found a really cool scout sheath yesterday that led me here so if you could only have one witch would it be....new knife.....cool sheath....??????

Having held both, the new model has better grinds, and has a much better heat treat. I would definitely pick up the new one. It doesn't disappoint.

off hand...got any thing bad or good to say about the cut outs under the handles ? seems like a weekness to me (a chink in the armor)

No problems with the handle - you won't be breaking it any time soon. It's quite a thing.

ever hear of one breaking? if so what did it take to do it . I had heard a rumour that batoning has been known to claim a few new Beckers at points under the handles but i have yet to see the evidence.

The Kabar version BK2 isn't going to break. It's very beefer but still cuts extremely well. For you older Camullus you might try some handle liners or the micarta grips or both to make the handle thicker.

I added liners to my bk5 and it was exactly what it needed to make it feel just right.

Any suggestions on liner material

PM Flexx here on the forums. He makes great liners at a very reasonable price. As far as the Ka-Bar BK2, it's a tank. I'm not saying that it couldn't break but I've never seen or heard of it. The Ka-Bar Becker line is an outstanding value. Give it a try.

I've heard and seen of exactly one BK2 breaking. The owner had apparently used it as a throwing knife "hundreds" of times. That might not sound like much, but knives Heat Treated hard enough to be useful in the field are actually too hard to be used for throwing.

Throwing knives makes them vibrate like a tuning fork, if the steel is very hard, then it will develop microfractures that will propagate over time. This is exactly what happened to this BK2.

wow I there's something you don't see in knife reviews on the bk2, do you think batoning would cause the same thing to happen there has to be close to the same amount of shock to the blade I would think

Your not going to break a BK2 batoning. There is a thread around here somewhere that shows a BK2 going through a lawnmower deck and cinder block as well as a ton of other tough inanimate objects... I'm going to find the link.

No its a different form of shock. Physics. With batoning energy is transferred from the moving baton to the stationary knife which then transfer to the log being split. Some energy is lost both back to the baton (you can see that with dents in the baton) but most is transferred into the log being split with the knife just transferring.. With throwing all of the energy is in the knife and that energy comes to a rapid hault when it hits said target. In that case it was a tree I believe. Since the tree isn't going to split to allow the release of energy, most of the stored inertia energy is transfered back into the knife after impact. Thus causes the extra stress.

Technically it voids the warranty to baton, but in reality the bk2 can take that and then some. Don't worry about breaking a new bk2. And if you do I forsee Kabar stepping up and taking care of you as long as you don't break it in.a vice on purpose

You guys are great ....I think I have seen that video with the lawnmower deck . Do you think my camillus Bk2 is up for the same amount of work? And is it weird to be holding it while I'm on here lol ( my Bk2)
