i just ordered it online, and i'm planing of taking it hunting for deer and stuff like that. does anyone know if it is a good skining and field dressing knife as well?

Something I did not do with my RC5..It will without a doubt hack thru Bone & a carcass. not sure ,I think the RC5 is more for getting out of an Elk or moose if your eaten and the RC4 may serve you better in skinning game ...RC5 without a doubt would quarter game

Agree 100%. The RC 4 is a great skinner. In my opinion, the perfect size.

If you want a knife than can skin it, gut it, and hack at it, the RC 5 may be better though.

The RC4 is better suited to the skinning task not that it wouldn't do the job, it just wont do quite as nice of a job of it.

Most of the skinning and field dressing I've done over the years I used a Case Trapper so I would say no. If I had to use a RC-5 for such tasks, like in a survival situation I would probably try to hold it by the blade(below). If having the RC-5 along is appealing get one and also bring a small folder or maybe an Izula. If you want to keep it simple just get creative with how you hold it. The hold I'm showing has worked for me on rare occasions when I only had a large knife.

I'd personally have suggested an RC-3 for a hunting knife. I prefer a smaller, thinner knife for game processing and skinning. Just works better for me. Do give a report on how the RC-5 works, though, that would be interesting information for sure.

Well i odered it, it still is on back order somehow. i cant wait to use it in hunting and i willbe posting my finds as soon as i get the knife.

Good idea. The Izula is a perfect companion to any of the larger RATs. Carrying it means you can take a knife that's maybe a little larger than you might like because you have a backup for the fine detailed work.

I skinned and butchered some nice bears with my RC-4. I have a Helle skinner that is a little better for skinning given the thinness and blade shape, but I feel very comfortable with just the RC-4 and would not feel the need for a 5 with elk etc.

I think the thickness and the fact that it's a scandi grind will make the edge less than ideal for skinning. I'd also get an RC-3 for the skinning and slicing duty. The RC-5 , however, would be useful for quartering and prying apart of bones, pelvis, etc.

I would choose an RC3 or 4 for this task. The RC5 is just too large and heavy for my taste in this task.

The RC5 is a survival, escape type knife while the RC 3 and 4 are more general and hunting applications.
