Is the Street Beat really that awesome?

I'm going to be honest here - this thread nearly pushed me over the top but a friend reminded me of Oklahoma's stupid knife laws listing "bowie" knives as restricted from carry.

And while I understand that "Clip-point" doesn't necessarily equal "bowie" I think most LEOs (that actually know the law) would disagree.

I'm still contemplating buying it and just carrying it in "safe" areas, but not being able to EDC it everywhere really puts a damper on things.

Knife laws can be a bummer. It's unfortunate that the times I'd most like to carry a decent sized knife for protection, at night on foot or on my bike, are the times I'm most worried about getting in trouble for carrying one.

Just spent a half hour reading up on OK laws (I am not an attorney). Here's what you didn't mention:

" except this section shall not prohibit:

1. The proper use of guns and knives for hunting, fishing, educational or recreational purposes;"

In my opinion, the street beat is ok to carry for lawful recreational purposes. And YES, it is that awesome! Get yourself one... :)

Yeah, I could carry it while backpacking fishing/hunting, and I could argue the recreational purposes thing for EDC but I fear it would be a $160 gamble on losing that argument. We just got the "other spring-type mechanism" crap removed from our knife-laws which were the source of confusion where people were getting assisted knives confiscated so we're working on it, but until we get all the way there, I just don't know if it's worth the gamble to lose this guy.

As an Okie I have edc'd a fixed blade for quite some time with no hassles. The laws here are loose enough to essentially say anything is anything (silly I know), and a lot is going to come down to what an officer says, what a judge says, and what a jury might think. Even a case in Texas ruled that a kitchen knife=bowie LOL! SO carry with that in mind. I have carried out and about small fixed blades, and large ones most of my life, and from my experience the key is to be a law abiding citizen and use common sense. Officers are probably going to leave you alone as long as you are not speeding down the highway at a billion miles per hour, running stop signs, picking fights, being a loud mouth, waving your knife around etc etc. They are more concerned about picking up thugs than they are a normal guy with a pocket knife... everyone has a knife here, even grandmas... lol Also walking into a post office/public places with a 9" knife hanging off your hip is probably not smart... Right now I have a SYKCO 311 I carry inside the pocket but with enough handle showing that its not concealed. Concealing is a no no... but they would only figure that out if its obvious, or you get in trouble and then you have a concealed knife, that would be bad... another EDC is a BK15 in the pocket... you'd be surprised by how many people did not even notice.

So to summarize, USE COMMON SENSE, if you are not sure or not comfortable dont do it... keep your nose clean, obey the laws (no daggers, dirks, bowies, "Uber Tactical Person Aerator 2000's" etc), and be conscious about your audience, or the type of people that might see and you will probably be fine. ALSO certain counties have length limits, for example OKC has a 4" limit... also probably not the best idea to go to brick town/ or a bar and wave around a fixed blade, in the pocket is probably fine... Just dont try to draw attention to yourself, (dont be a fool lol) Most people who have noticed any of my fixed blades usually say, "hey thats an awesome knife, can I see?" then a civil conversation ensues.

By the way, the street beat has been on my want list, but cant justify the price... plus I love me some carbon steel LOL

not a lawyer, just giving you my perspective from living here my whole life. Your mileage may vary completely, good luck.

At least you can legally EDC something ...... Perhaps you could get one of the short handle Bussekins ( Rodent 3 or SAR3) nice comfy carry. Great blades, beautifully curved bellies....
