Is the Surge worth the extra?

Just posted this over in the multitool subforum just wondered what you guys think.

"Hey guys, I normally post over in W&SS but my question is more MT related, I have a quandary, my leatherman supertool has bit the dust (broke the saw off completely), I sent the tool back and they have said they'll replace it with a Core or try to put a supertool together out of part from others warranty returns.(Not sure about this option..)

Should I got with the Core or pay the difference and upgrade to a Surge?"

Not sure about the Surge, but I love my Wave! It replaced the supertool that I had had forever, the outside tools are really convenient, it's like having a one handed opening knive, for those times, plus you regular multitool.

IMO you're better off with a Charge. A charge with scissors is just about the perfect leatherman.

I have a surge, actually a brand new one. I melted one and sent it back, they replaced it no questions asked. To make them usable, they take a few hours worth of work. If you don't knock down all the edges, or you've got a blister factory. Pick one up and you'll see.

I guess what I'm saying, if it's for EDC I'd go Charge. If it's solely for the bush, the surge is great, provided you smooth it out.

I was actually in a similar predicament a year ago. I first bought a Surge at my local Sportsman's Warehouse. Carried it for a day or so, but it was quite a brute...too heavy for EDC. So I returned it, and went with a Blast. Was the perfect size for EDC, but no one handed opening blade function. UGH! So, I then returned the Blast and purchased a Core. Looking back I don't know what logic I was using because the Core is bigger and heavier than the Blast and still didn't have a one handed opening feature.

So, in closing, I finally kept the Core (it stays in my Jeep and doesn't depart from it) and purchased a Wave. It's my EDC. Perfect blend of functionality, weight reduction from the Core and Surge models, while being similar in size to the Blast, yet possessing the one handed opening blade feature. I suggest using better thought and judgment than I did. If weight isn't an issue, go with the Surge. If it is, go with the Wave or Charge. Both are smaller and have one handed opening blades, yet Charge is much more $$$. Happy choosing!

I carry the Surge and it is a good tool. However, I would never buy another. Just too big and heavy. It weighs more than many pistols.

The surge is a great tool. I dont EDC it however. It rides in my versipak. I EDC a swiss army farmer, and a Manix, and they do all I need. I would opt for a wave if it was for EDC. The surge is a durable well built tool and works wonderfull for tough tasks.

I've got a WAVE taht I've had for about 6 years and it's the best all around multi tool available IMO. That being said, I've also got a Surge that I bought because I'm a whore, an it is very very solid and great for heavy duty chores.

The WAVE can't be beaten for EDC though.

I've been leaning towards the Wave. Lots of tools, not too heavy, nice clean appearance. Hard to beat.

Thanks for the replies all. My old supertool was primarily a work tool that rode my hip everyday, it's weight wasn't a factor. That being said I might have to go find a store that carries the range and check out the weight factor of the Surge. I'm a tall guy (6'4") and use the MT for all sorts of HD stuff as a landscaper and in the bush. I'm also a southpaw so the one-handed opening thing is a pain as the both blades are set up for righties, still handier than opening the whole tool to get access.

I haven't handled a Core(looks nice on the Internet),but the Surge is huge and heavy, heavier than I remember the supertool. I see you are in Aus.so if you can, get one of the new charge alx's.

I had a Surge briefly. Like others have said, it is big and heavy brick of an edc. I found the quality to be on par with other Leatherman stuff, but I decided the Surge was a bit gimicky with its blade exchanger and bit drivers. I traded it for a Swisstool with no regrets. I have several Leatherman tools, but I have come to prefer Victorinox Swisstools.

Same as many others - I carry a Surge in a bag, but I would suggest a lighter alternative if I was carrying it on my person.
