is the TSEK really supposed to be the "affordable" AFCK?

Why thank ya there AYB! I was hoping someone out there would understand. I saw on another post where Glockman had opined that the maple inserts might interfere with the grip comfort but I do not find that to be so. Actually, in the grip position, I am not really aware of them being there at all. But the Axis is a little quirky. When I gravity-flip it open the Axis sticks so that it takes both my thumb and forefinger to disengage it. I trying to work it out with a little Militec and heat.

I have owned both and I much prefer the TSEK,the thumbstuds are much better than the hole on the AFCK as far as easy blade opening in concearned.

The TSEK just looks better and for me has a more usefull blade shape for everything except self defense.

I would also love to see this knife in S30V or D2.

But.

I have found that Benchmades 440C is above par, very easy to sharpen and very aggresive steel, yes BG-42 or S30V may hold an edge longer,I havent found VG-10 to be better.Ease of sharpening is also paramount-all knives get dull.
Benchmades 440C is perfect for a using knife.Yes other steels cut longer but take much more time to sharpen-you could be sharpened and cutting again with this steel while someone else would still be sharpening the S30V ect. WHO IS REALLY GETTING MORE CUTTING TIME????????

Time spent sharpening detracts from time spent cutting.

To answer your question-yes,both knives are worth the price.

Point well made. The M2 on this 805HSSR seems to sharpen up quickly enough for me though. And with the bitchin blade design I really had no need for a serrated edge. I don't think SE ever added anything to the looks of a great blade either. 440C plain edge would just tickle the sh*t outta me:D

I was thinking that the affordable AFCK is the Pica. But I don't know much about BM knives, so please forgive my ignorance. :(

Dialex, I think you have a good point there that was missed in this meandering "stream of consciousness" thread (as Abe so aptly called it). And thank you for that.
I have never had a Pika. They certainly look similar to the AFCK although the blade is a tad shorter. This is from BMs catalogue description of the Pika:
Some will recognize the roots of this design— we felt it too good to let slide.
I see now BM is using 440C for the blade instead of n690. I see the handle is FRN instead of G-10. The locking mech is a lockback.
Answer: IMO the Pika does appear to be the "affordable" AFCK
Questions
1.Does anybody have any experience with the Pika?
2.Is it as shipshape as other BM products despite have economy materials?
3. What the heck is n690 and how does it perform?

I can field a couple of your Q's...

1.Does anybody have any experience with the Pika?

I have one in it's prior incarnation that went by the name of the "Ascent". It's definately along the same lines as the Spyderco Endura. Mine has ATS-34 blade steel and is a decent enough cutter but is not a heavy duty "hard use" kind of knife, IMO.

2.Is it as shipshape as other BM products despite have economy materials?

As stated above, it's decent enough to do everything an Endura can do. Actually this knife has always reminded me of an AFCK/Endura hybrid. You know, basic shape of an AFCK but same basic materials and construction of an Endura.

3. What the heck is n690 and how does it perform?

Can't answer this one. Sorry. :(

N690 is a good steel. It has some cobalt in it. I'd say it performs very similar to the ATS-55, which is a very underrated steel :(. IMO, it works better than the ATS-34 (I know I can flame a couple sprits here, but I do have some ATS-34 knives and I wasn't impressed at all).
