Is the UTX-70 practical?

Hi all, I’ve been looking into picking up a Microtech utx-70 CA (if I can find one) to use as a daily cary. I cary a Benchmade 940 with the S90V blade for work and it has never let me down, but outside of work, it just seems like a lot of knife to cary. I really like the CA legal singe edge utx-70 from Microtech, but would a 1.9” blade be useful? Any experience from anyone that has this knife as a part of their EDC?

I personally find the UTX-70 to slim for my meaty hands, and 1.9" is not a lot to work with. Basically an expensive keychain knife.

I assume you are in CA. Otherwise, I prefer the Heretic Manticore S.

I have a couple and I do like them, but they aren't the sliciest, at least not the double edge versions. If the blade was a bit wider it would be more useful. I think the Exocet is a handier size blade and I do believe they are CA legal, at least some of them are.

I’ll occasionally carry one as a “dress knife” but find them to be a little small for EDC.

My wife keeps one on her desk at work as her letter opener and I in the kitchen for the ever present Amazon boxes.

They sharpen up like razors and she loves a good chance to use them.

Actually I think my daughter has one on her counter to use as a mail opener.

I bought one for myself as well but can find no use for it but it is a fun little knife.

Lot of good points. I mean when I have a knife on me when I don’t plan to do any work, it’s main use is going to be a box/package opener (and also an occasional beer can shotgun tool 🍻) definitely going for small in this case, and of course the fidget factor of a double action otf

Pretty much what I plan to use it for, aside from firing it in and out while watching tv 🤷‍♂️ looks like this is gonna be incredibly hard to find for sale online 👎

Do you have both the double edge and single edge versions? I really like having a single edge knife to be able to press on the spine of the knife if needed, but never owned a double edge. Do you see any pros or cons between the two?

This is my California legal (2" blade") Troodon Mini. It fires like a rocket and is VERY comfortable and useful. Even the wife likes using it to open boxes.

I’ve always thought the jade g10 and black hardware is one of the best color combos Microtech did. Beautiful knife! Definitely another option if I can’t find a cali utx-70 anywhere

Wow this is definitely going to be a tough one to find! Anyone have any recommendations of where I might be able to find a single edge California utx 70? Don’t really care about the color, as long as it cuts!

Check the exchange. I seeeee one…. Or two, or three, etc. Plus anywhere that sells Microtechs will have a few. They aren’t hard to find, at all.

I just have to ask - Are you limited to that size of knife, do you have dinky hands, or just think it’ll be cool? What size of knife do you normally carry?

The UTX-85 would make a much better EDC than the 70 and even that one was far too small for me. My EDC is a Combat Troodon, so even the full size Ultratech feels dainty to me. “I gots ta know.”
