Is the UTX-70 practical?

Check the exchange. I seeeee one…. Or two, or three, etc. Plus anywhere that sells Microtechs will have a few. They aren’t hard to find, at all.

I just have to ask - Are you limited to that size of knife, do you have dinky hands, or just think it’ll be cool? What size of knife do you normally carry?

The UTX-85 would make a much better EDC than the 70 and even that one was far too small for me. My EDC is a Combat Troodon, so even the full size Ultratech feels dainty to me. “I gots ta know.”
I definitely found a few UTX-70s on there, but the last posted California legal version was posted and sold in December of last year 👎
I normally carry a Benchmade 940 and is great for using at work, but would really like just a small blade on me for when I’m not at work to open packages or cut frayed threads. Also carry a Benchmade Barrage and a Leatherman Crunch in my car at all times so I usually have a larger blade accessible if I really need it 👍

Man I thought you just sent over a jackpot with those listings! Unfortunately those are all the normal 2.4” blade utx 70s, I am looking for the utx-70s with the 1.9” blade (gotta love California where 1/2” longer blade becomes an “illegal weapon”)

Microtechs are stupid enough at 4”, don’t bother with this nonsense man

For those of us who carry multiple knives, I think there's actually a good argument for carrying one of these mini autos as a quick-grab package opener. For example: a small fixed blade for slicing tasks, an SAK for the tools, and a mini auto for package opening; would leave you fairly well prepared for most EDC tasks. I even kinda like the idea that we all took a stupid law that we all disagree with and turned it into a its own little sub-genre of knives. As an all-around one knife EDC on the other hand, not so much.

Agreed! I’m definitely a most convenient tool for each job kinda guy, so I’ve always liked the idea of having all different kinds of edc gear for different occasions. I just wish that the extra 1/2” of blade didn’t result in potential prison time if caught with it 👎

For an OTF, I have found the 3" range to be the sweet spot for EDC. I love the big Combat Troodons, but the 2.9-3.5" seem to do what I need done without drawing a ton of attention. However, I get needing to stick within the California laws.

Have you looked at the Exocet? Pretty much designed around California office carry. Easy to find and unpopular enough that you can find them on sale readily. I wouldn't mind having one as a dress knife/money clip, but as a jeans and tee-shirt guy who wears work boots 7 days a week I don't have much need for one.

Feels pretty slim in a medium-sized hand, apart from opening packages and the occasional loose thread I don't see it being useful for much more. It's basically an overpriced utility knife at that point. Cool af, but not that practical compared to what you carry atm.

Do you have both the double edge and single edge versions? I really like having a single edge knife to be able to press on the spine of the knife if needed, but never owned a double edge. Do you see any pros or cons between the two?
The main pro is a double edge will obviously have twice as much edge as the single 🤪
But the D/E will be Thick behind the edge. I have a regular double sided Ultratech, and it’s like an XM-24 BTE….
The single edge version will have noticeably better geometry for cuttin stuff.

You could also get one side fully serrated the other plain, if I ever go that route I'm definitely getting that. Serrations make short work of those plastic straps on bigger boxes, and while a pain to sharpen stay sharp a lot longer.

Great point. Partial serrations never really made sense to me, and I would never edc a fully serrated blade. Seems like a knife is never sharp enough to cut those plastic straps when they are cranked down on a pallet/boxes 🤣
