Is there a !50UH

Sheath is on the way the funny thing is I just looked at your sheath and it is actually an early Schrade I was just in the bin and saw several of them so there is a good chance it came with that sheath originally. I wondered what they went to. I know they used them on Schrade Walden stuff. early 60 tys. they stopped most of the buck stitch stuff early in the 70 tys. LT

Just goes to show you how truely limited my knowledge is on earlier Schrade sheaths. Sheaths, it seems, could be a study unto themselves. I have a box full of them, and some are of totally unknown origin, sheaths being not nearly as durable as early knives. Very few are stamped SCHRADE. I have one original that is stamped "Genuine Buffalo Hide" on the front, and several with different die stamped floral or wildlife scenes. Replacement sheaths are a bane, and unless a knife is acquired NIB with all the proper inclusions, it is hard in most cases to be sure just what was oem and what was not. You cannot even trust 100% in what was illustrated in the catalogs and fliers because likely as not, they were pre-production photo examples, and illustrations were used for years not incorporating new art depictions of the minor changes in sheaths and knives. Adding that Schrade changed designs throughout production, carried over and adapted prior designs for new lines, no wonder it is confusing! For instance, just when I think I have the number and types of sheaths pegged for the pedestrian Sharpfinger, Phil, Larry or I find another variant. From what I thought were "the three", I believe I am up to five of those now, and suspect more lurk in the wings.

As I have said in the past one of the nice things about Schrades ( especially but not exclusively in the later years (post WW II ) was there whore like nature in that many special issues, contracts, prototypes as well as a myriad of other factors produced all kinds of variations which means you never know what you will find the key is being able to put the pieces together so that things can be varified, the sheath is a perfect example because the ones I found came directly from the depths of the factory and are mixed with most of the versions we are familiar with. You never know when an insignificant piece of information gleaned for a completely unrelated reason will tie off a piece of a question which may have been dangling about forever.

Of course in the greater spectrum and except for a few individuals of questionable sanity ( of which I am the greatest example ) you would probably say who really cares?

Over the years quite a few examples of this kind of thing have popped up. About a year ago I was contacted about a pressbutton large ( automatic hunter with a swedged saber blade. ) I know that I was not the only ( so called authority contacted on my opinion regarding this knife.) I also know that others, who were asked for an opinion felt the knife was not correct or original and that these were never made this way in fact I had never seen one before and neither had anyone who I know or have known.

However It did lead me to wonder and after digging in my archives I found a copy of an original first catalogue put out by pressbutton. ( by the way an original of this 20 page black and white catalogue just sold last week for 565+ dollars. ) (I went to 150 on it and then decided my copy would work just as well ) any way sure enough one of the options in that first catalogue was for a saber swedged version of the knife. I did an article on this piece in the AKA switchblade newsletter out of Phoenix. The point being that you never know what will pop up and figuring out these bits of lost history can be quite enjoyable.

Another instance of this just happened, it is a bit more complicated but just as gratifying in fact I have not made it public yet but an item came into my posession several years ago and I have recently identified what it is I believe in some circles ( of these possessed individuals ) it will create quite a stir. . Chances are none of us will have the opportunity to ever solve the secrets of the pryamids or conquer the great mysterys of the universe but, this field and these items offer any one who goes to a yard sale or flea market a chance to find a treasure and in a small way contribute to this great american history. Again as with any field the secret is knowing what you have a 2000 dollar antique in the hands of someone with no idea of what it is has no worth other than being an old knife or tool. I know of one case where a fellow broke a 1000 dollar knife making it worth about 200 dollars because it never occured to him that the knife was an automatic. He did tug on it until opened and then hung like a er flacid appendage. When he realized how much money his ignorance cost him I imagine that the knife was not the only flacid appendage.

All that being said, they are out there hiding in cigar boxes, old chest of drawers, in attics an cellars case zippers ( automatic versions ) KA-BARS. Press button guardians, Schrades of all styles candy stripe fishtails, marine pearl hunters all waiting. Yup totally insane for these are the sugar plums that dance in my head. Good Hunting LT
