Is there a comprehensive directory of knives and knife histories of any makers?

I have recently gotten into collecting knives and have been able to pull a lot of info from the product catalogs from all the major makers. Many have catalogs dating back a few years, but further than that they are not available. I run my own IT company and there is this resource http://www.cpu-world.com/ that has a very comprehensive list of all models and all relevant information for processors sorted based on maker and features. Does anything like this exist for knives?

No.
The forums are a good source, as there is knowledge.
On some topics a few books to exist.
Probably the theme is to wide, it's constantly developing.
Where is your focus?

Check Knife World (or whatever their new name is) for out of print books. There are a lot of catalog reprints available and other books on history of various knife companies.

ultimately I just want to look through a couple makers past knives and see if there are any that really pique my interest and make me want to hunt them down. I might start piecing together the information available to try and do this for others. I'll probably just start with spyderco because they have the most catalogs available and try to go back as far as I can to make a database with pictures of all of the knives they've made.

I checked them out just now and their website is pretty disappointing and it doesn't look like they have been generating much new content.
