Hi all,
Seems like I’ve been “inflicted” with the knife collecting bug. Is there any hope for me now? Just went on a little spree and chastised myself , vowing to wait awhile before buying another one. Then I just ordered a display case….. is there any hope for me now?😒

I bought my first Spyderco, a Paramilitary 2, in December, after already moving on from BudK and starting to collect knives like Ontario, Mora, Higonokami, Douk-Douk, Otter-Messer... by February, I had three PM2s and nine Spydies, now I just got my fifth PM2, 15 Spydies in total and three more on the way. Mainly bought Spydies, but also two XL Espadas, some other Cold Steel, some RATs... way, way more knives than I need, did I get from December, to now. I also realized I have to chill out.

Gotta set limits, and also learn to love/get to know what you have. I did the same thing, bought a bunch of super steels when I just last night was celebrating turning a dull K55 Mercator from dull to almost reliably slicing through paper. I need to learn to take care of and maintain all these steels, gotta learn to use the diamond stropping stuff I just got, you know?

I have like, two more knives coming in because of a few really good reasons, but other than that, I'm done for a while. It's like addiction, though, there is no cure, just getting better, "one day at a time". You'll always be a knife addict, haha. You may rotate in and out through phases, but you got the bug. Some people get the bug, some don't. Some can get one Spyderco and be satisfied, others need two-hundred.

Better get to the knife makers for sale area and buy a few customs also.
This is exactly what I was thinking too (as I write a big post about controlling my addiction).... I need ONE good fixed blade before I can stop, I wonder if a custom in 3V on here is cheaper than a Magnum Tanto Warcraft!

There's lots worse "addictions " .

Main thing for me : set a budget and stay within reasonable limits of time and energy as well as money spent on my hobby / entertainments .

Keep it on a leash and it can be great fun .

No... There is no cure. I go through phases where I'm just not interested and go for five months to yrs without being on this forum or thinking about new knives. But when the time arises for you to buy one consider selling another that you are not totally in love with. My rotation is supposed to be 4, but it's 5 right now. I will sell one and bring it back to 4.
Been rinsing and repeating for years.

Welcome.

From my experience, one can only hope to resist the urge to acquire more knives. But the URGE lives on, and is always there, itching just under the surface.

I'm 52 years old, and started acquiring knives when I was about 6. As a child/adolescent I tried to buy every knife I saw (fortunately they were few and far between), then as an adult I found a local knife store, where I could get instant gratification, so I would buy new knives just for the feeling of having a new knife.

But today I am a recovering knife addict. I have resolved to not buy any more. And I think I can stick to it (it's been several months now, and so far, so good), but the urge is still there, particularly when I'm browsing the internet and I see a knife that appeals to me. I feel the itch, but I resist the temptation. Resisting is made easier by the fact that I simply don't need any more knives, and I'm living a self-funded early retirement, and I'd rather keep the money for other things.

But it sounds like you might be new to this. So for you, and for quite awhile, there won't be any hope of a cure ;).

Yeah, worse addictions like meth-- that s**t will make you all scabby and toothless.

...and coke...but wait a minute...strike that...coke may be cheaper than knife collecting. 🤔

So yeah, in summary, there's worse addictions than knife accumulation, such as meth, and probably a couple other things...maybe.
