Is there a decent home-made paint stripper?

There is a chance that the acetone may have worked on the old style coating, as it was less robust than the new textured coating.

Paint stripper is worth it though. Hand sanding through the coating is a giant pain.

I used sandpaper after all. I did a partial strip, and I now have what I think is a nice looking polish on. Will post pics if you guys are interested.

All the time and effort you spent getting this info, and then doing the recommendations, you could have driven to town, stopped for lunch....and dinner, picked up some paint stripper, went home and gave it a go. In this heat the stripper would have completely peeled off all the coating in about 10 minutes, with extremely minimal scrubbing and scrapping.

Oh well, no one ever said hard working laziness was easy. All the sanding was the exact opposite of laziness, I guess.

No worries. Hope it works out for ya. :D

Oh yeah...one more thing.....pics.....or we wasted our time here. ;)

I have no problems doubling the work in an effort to avoid the method I don't feel like. Besides, the paper was cheaper and didn't smell as bad. And I am too broke for lunch, much less dinner.

Its all good. I've been there myself.

Acetone will work, it's just more work and takes 2-3 applications then some serious scraping. I stripped my new BK5 last week using acetone. I applied a couple of coats then scraped the surface layer off leaving a duller paint layer , then let the third coat of acetone sit on it for a few minutes then scraped the remaining paint layer off. However the dedicated paint strippers available work better, faster and easier! When i stripped my BK9 6 months ago using proper paint stripper it was MUCH easier to strip.

The soak I gave it may have made it easier to sand off the coat. I wouldn't know, as I sanded after the fact.

Then what you need to do is buy another BK9 and just sand it and compare the results. Oh, and another BK9 and use Citustrip and compare the 'ease' of that process.

And one more to leave black?
