Is there a good knife for a present

Hi there,

My father is turning 60 soon and I am wondering for a present. What is for sure he is crazy about knives (all kinds of them) but his mania has always been restricted by my Mom.

So, I hope you can help me in my choice to either:
a/ choose a knife that my Mom wouldn’t consider ‘aggressive’ or ‘abrupt’ (if you can send me a pictures of such type it’ll be great)
or
b/ to upload various knife info on a website (like I’ve done it here: http://sitekreator.com/PHO) with lots of pics, etc. The good thing is that my dad will be able to afterwards update the site without any efforts. And it’ll definitely take me less time to build it then to search for a real knife. Unless you guys decide on helping me with ideas.

My first thought would be a mini-Rittergrip. One heck of a knife and, with a 2.88" blade length, not so big as to worry your mother too much. About $100 though, so you need to really love your father  .

or a kiwi- I wrote about the one I got for my dad, He's thrilled with it.

Al Mar Hawk. A great little gent's knife with a nice selection of handle materials. You can get hardwood, mother of pearl, micarta, stainless and I've seen some places offer dressed up versions with work done on the bolsters.

Spyderco Calypso, Jr. in zdp super steel. Its pink (maroon actually) for goodness sake.

Any Swiss Army Knife.

Nice kitchen knife if he cooks, Mom will have trouble complaining about that.

Ask him what knife he would like if he didn't have to worry about your Mom's veto power. Then get it for him. He can hide it if he has to but life is too short to pass on such a small pleasure just because somebody disapproves of it.

I hope he picks a Camillus CQB-1. :D

I'd look at a Victorinox Swiss Army knife. More specifically, I'd look at one of the alox models. Classy, well-built, useful.

If he is an old timer like some of us old farts that hang out here and on the other forums he probably knows who Bill Scagel was. There are some truly fine authorized Scagel reproductions being sold right now that are just wonderful little high carbon blades and well built sturdy little folders made the old fashioned way.

I have three of these and carry and use one quite often. It is a gem of a folder and perhaps one of my all time favorite knives. I recommend them as gifts for users and for the collectible value too. The first one I bought for $160 is now selling for a minimum of $325 at shows and on ebay. In this day and age you can't beat that with a stick for investment value. I haven't even had it a year yet.

Check out the new two blade one with the Bolsters at the MSA forum. It is a great knife. Mine just came and I love it! Best one yet. You can also see the new bigger model compared to the first and second one that came out on the thread link below. As I recall there was only 200 made of the new one. 143 of the first one and I think 150 of the second. Don't hold me to that but those numbers are close.

If he doesn't already have a nice one, a multi tool might be a good idea.

Ditto on the multi-tool. :D Check out the new Leatherman Surge and Core or my favorite, the Wave.

I suggest a Benchmade 556 Mini-Griptilian in either blue or OD green.

I've given 3 Kershaw Leeks as presents. The quick opening and razor sharp blade are high wow factors to nonknife people. Lots of pretty handles to pick as well. Heck I admit I like the knife as well.

If you are going to buy a multitool I would recommend the gold TINI powerlock:

I own the "standard" powerlock and it is awesome and I highly recommend it. :)

Go into a knife store and play with a Kershaw Scallion. Easy to carry, Assisted-opening with a "finger trigger", nice size and available in 3 or 4 different colors.

Oh yeah, after you check it out, buy one online for $26 brand new.

If cost is not an issue, R.J. Martin makes a nice knife, he also makes folders. This is the Manta Ray.
