Is there a knife you hated but ended up loving?

I used to hate the Mora 2000, and thought it was the ugliest cheapest-looking toy of a knife. And then I bought one. Now, I actually like the weird way it looks and I love the way it cuts.

I never cared for my Military. It did not open smoothly, and I could just never get into it. Didn't even like the blade shape. On a whim, I bought a user Military for $50 off of BF that had been reground after the tip broke off. This one opens like butter, and I like the appearance of the reground blade. I've been carrying it for a few weeks now, and understand why folks like 'em. Having the knife open smoothly makes all the difference.

Striking really how many of us hated Spyderco once, only to fall in love later.

Spyderco is like Renée Zellweger. At first glance she is too fragile, thin and has this 'stupid blonde' look, but when you see her more often you actually start loving her. I was told she has brains too.

She's still ugly though.

Well I don't love it but I do like it. That is the Buck 889. I gave my nephew one and he cut up and skinned a nice buck with his. Never resharpened it when processing the deer. He used a meat saw for the big parts and large bones obviously but the rest, tendon, sinews leg joints etc. he used the Buck and it worked great. Needed sharpening after, I checked the edge but truthfully it wasn't that bad at all. So I have been relooking at my other I have and must say that it is way better than the 882 I have in pse. This one locks up like a vault even with the thin liner lock. No play, wiggle etc. etc. So there you go. I don't love it but I do like it alot more than I did. keepem sharp

I'm not a one company knife person. I like BM's, KAI's, Spyderco's, Mcusta, Seki-Cut, etc. But with regard to the OP's question, my answer would be any Spyderco. Up until a year or so ago I couldn't stand the looks of a Spyderco. I didn't buy any specifically because "I didn't like them" without ever using one or manipulating one for that matter. Somehow I decided to buy a CF Stretch and from the time I received that knife until today I'm totally hooked on them. I know this is a common story and I'm one of them.

That is interesting that you took a chance on one after your first experience.

Well i sorta had the opposite happen to me. I bought a Griprilian 551 PE and I carried it for about 5 days, and then it never saw pocket time again..... I thought it would be the knife I would carry every day, but as it turns out, it wasn't. I am definitely not knocking on the Grip, it was awesome! Great feel in the hand, good steel, sharp as could be, axis lock, etc. but for some reason i never carried it. It just recently for traded off for a spyderco Police which should be arriving next week. Hopefully that sees some pocket time!

I can't pick any particular knife but I am going for a Genre or style/design of knife here. For years I overlooked Slipjoints when shopping for knives. Shame on me! I wish I had half the knives I have passed up over 25 or so years. Now I have all but deleted my locking knives and I have a wonderful (To Me) small collection of Slippies I rotate through everyday. I still have some locking knives, don't get me wrong... But now I look for traditional style knives 95% of the time...
