OK I love the Becker BK2 knife but I hate the black epoxy covering on the blade and the black plastic handles.

I have looked for something similiar but anything I like is far beyond my budget.

So is there a knifemaker out there that would take my knife beadblast it and make some nice handles for it? For a reasonable cost?

thanks for any help.

Welcome to the forums

You can go and get a chemical stripper at home depot . Coating comes off easy

You can find aftermarket handles on ebay I believe micarta and replace them yourself

Fun project

You may want to repost this in the knife tinkering and embellishment sub-forum

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=794

If you are looking for a maker to do it, you are gonna have to pay for his/her time, and you may want to list your area (where do you live) when asking. Chances are there is someone who has done it before and can help you out.

Have a good one,
Nathan

Thanks for the responses. I don't know if it is shiny under that coating I don't want a shiny knife I like the duller bead blasted look. I saw some micarta handles for it but I would like to pick the color.

I am in the Bangor Maine area, I understand I need to pay someone to do this and I am willing to.

I have reposted this in the forum you specified if a mod would like to remove thise one.

Thanks

I'm not sure if he would do that project but Lamont Coombs is in Bucksport. He is a good guy. His # is 207-469-3057.

Weird thing is I grew up in Bucksport seen that sign there forever didn't even think of that. I checked out his website he does really high end stuff so I am not sure he would be interested in such a modest project. But I sent him an email.

Those sound very reasonable. Do you have any access to grey/black micarta or G10? (Then they would match the grips on my .45)

Well I am willing to do DIY but I don't want to just strip off the black and have a shiny blade. Is there a DIY way to give the blade a satiny bead blasted type look?

More of a gun guy even though I have a bunch of knives this is all new to me. I want a heavy duty knife for camping but I still care about looks cuz I am a weirdo ;-) That 1/4" thick blade and the shape just look perfect for all the camp chores. Plus I am sure bashing in tent stakes and chopping wood would wreck the coating on that blade pretty quick anyways.

There are some places that sandblast in my area what if I have the coating sandblasted off? Would that leave a dull finish?

I don't have any of that color in stock, but Tracy Mickley at USA Knifemaker's Supply has some material that might work: http://www.usaknifemaker.com/store/...6.html?zenid=aa8c04b2b8a34c5e16cd6f58ca7fb537

You may want to consider giving your blade a hand-rubbed satin finish. It takes very little equipment (sandpaper, clamps, and a stick), and looks good. You can leave the finish relatively coarse if you don't want it to look too shiny. Here's an example of a blade I left coarse:

Lamont Coombs has actually agreed to do my knife and has has sandblasting facilities on site too. He is only about ten miles from me so this is awesome news! Thanks to everyone for your help. I will post pics when finished.
