Thinking of putting up a website for my knives in the near future. Is there a tutorial on building a knife makers website. You know, for the computer illiterate:eek:!
I have been checking into this and it seems to get alot more complicated as I go. I have what I want as a domain name, same as my makers mark and them I have to find a host. I know it will cost more but I hate web sites that have all the freaking adds! So that will be out for me. But the big thing to me is I need something that I can figure out how to edit, and make changes, when I see fit.
I want to build something that is quick and functional. I know I hate to go to a site that takes for ever to open or seems to be set up all bass ackwards (as my ole daddy use to say)!
Any of you all got advice on websites? How to, what to avoid and such?????

Toss me an email and I'll walk you through it. It's a very straight forward process to setting up a domain name. :)

The basic rundown is go to a web host like 1and1.com and purchase a package (about 3.99/monthly). You get 1 domain name registration that you never have to pay for as long as you have a 1&1 package. Then you can set up a website. (I can help you with that too.)

Try using a strong HTML editor. I think given a little time it would make anyone pretty good at it.

I used "NVU" to build my first, and Komposer to build my second, both are free and work very well.
I have used Go daddy for hosting, and I'm very happy with them.

Then start by making a plan, like finding a webstie with a raltively simple layout you like, and copying it as close as possible. most features are easily copied or discovered by right clicking a web-page and "view source". There is alot of copying done out there, so there is no shame in it.

Having someone avialable to IM or call is a life-saver. GoDaddy support is pretty great for setting up the hosting account and getting your files set up to load to their server.

I put mine up on Yahoo, you can get the domain and use their templates to put text and pictures no need to know HTML or anything about the internet, it does it all for you. They will set up your email as well.

Take a look at my site, simple but it works.

Josh I appreciate the offer to help!
ron m80 I just talked to my son in law don't know why I hadn't thought about picking his brain about the subject earlier but, anyway he told me the same thing about by right clicking a web-page and "view source. I guess you can teach an ole dog new tricks!:D
Patrick I like the way you got your site set up.
Fog2 I am not sure what this site is. Can you expand a little on how it works?

Can anyone recommend what not to do, or is there some pitfalls and problems to watch out for?

Problems to watch out for? Not much, except don't get so caught up in it that you hire people. Good websites (and help) are cheap if not free.

Don't bother with the latest and greatest, simple works, especially when all you really need is a photo gallery and contact page.

I agree COMPLETELY with the money issue, you should hire no one to do this for you. It is far too easy to do yourself with minimal resources.

I think good domain registration of www.YOURWEBSITE.com and .NET and .ORG are excellent ideas that prevent misuse of your website name, and protect you the knifemaker. And yes this costs a little EXTRA. But in the end is well worth the minor additonal costs.

My last website cost (i'm not exact but very close) about $250 total, for complete domain name registration on .com, .net, .org, thats three seperate websties. all redirrect to the real website at the .ORG account. plus unlimited storage, and high bandwidth. for three years. So for the cost, the fact that I have very little to aboslutely no trouble accessing my site anytime is a great deal.

If your not gonna be doing business on large scale (accepting orders, or accepting cradit cards) than get a hosting account that offers small storage, high bandwidth. let your online protion of your forge grow as you do from there.

It isn't free or too cheap, but I would do any site of mine the same way every time.

Google will take some time on a small site, but it will find you and get you in the result ranks after some time, it takes time. So be patient.

1&1 has some great beginner plans. Not much cost, simple to use, straight forward, and every problem I've ever had was answered by their tech support (even when it really turned out to be my PHP error. :foot: )

Apparently it defaults to that page instead of the one i linked from.

Click on *About blade makers* On the left 3rd from the bottom. It tells you what they offer and the cost, which seem,s cheap to me. As you can see Lots of Knifemakers have a site there.

I know nothing about having, building a site, but that was recommended to me by a Knifemaker i trust.
