I have a couple of the A2 flippers made by André Thorburn and André Van Heerden. Both named André, (A squared) Logo. Pretty neat idea for a Logo! But the A2 flippers are amazing and have the same action and feel as Thorburn’s L-models. Since Thorburn makes the Blade, titanium liners, bearing race, detent and lockup. While Van Heerden makes the scales and takes care of all fit and finishing. Van Heerden is an accomplished knife maker himself so all said and done you’re getting a wonderful product. Thorburn & Van Heerden are both members of the “Knife Makers Guild of South Africa” so you can be assured you’re getting a quality piece. Even more, they stand behind there work.
My A6 Flipper with 3.60” blade rivals my Koenig Arius easily. Yes, I know I’m going to rub Koenig owners the wrong way. But the A6 Flipper is what the Arius wanted to be.
I’m not pushing any specific website, just stating a fact. Thorburn and A2 have now allowed Blade Gallery to Service there Knives. This is a huge help so you don’t have to send all the way back to Sout Africa. But I’m sure if a more in-depth repair is needed it will need to go back to SA.
To answer about sizes....I myself like a 3” - 3.75” blade. But my sweet spot is 3.5” - 3.75”.
I have a Thorburn L51 that’s 3.80” cutting edge is 3.70” but looks and feels just like a 3.75”.
A good size and weight comparison to my L51 is an Umnumzaan, as most in BF have handled an Umnumzaan I would think.
4” blades are nice, but for pocket carry around town and if you ever had to defend yourself with one, a lot of courts won’t see it in your favor so I just stay away from 4” myself...My 2¢ worth.
