Is there any folder you COULD use for batoning?

Egally is correct, if you just let the handle hang while pushing the blade through you will not damage it at all. If you disengage the lock and pull down on the handle for easier batoning you can cause stress on the pivot but it's better than doing it in the locked position.

If you pull down on the handle of a fixed blade you run this risk of breaking it too. The point of the blade should be lower then the handle for a fixed blade or a folder.

Well, as a some of you have said many times already, I'm not a big fan of
batoning at all, especially with a folder. However, if in a worst case situation
I had to choose one of my folders to get the job done, my first choice
would be my Cold Steel Rajah II for sure. Runner up would be between my
BenchMade Adamas 275 and my Cold Steel Large Voyager.

Realistically though, I edc an ESEE RC-4 and a Wenger Ranger, so
theoretically I should always have a decent saw and a fixed blade.
Here's hopeing.lol

If I were choosing a folding knife to baton with it would likely be the Benchmade Adamas or one of the larger Cold Steel products. The thing is, I would be unlikely to carry a knife like this in the woods over a fixed blade which would be safer to baton with. It is essentially just a theoretical discussion for me.

22Rimfire,

It's not theoretical for me. I've done it numerous times with my 9 and 10 Opinels.

If I think there is a reasonable chance that I'm going to be battoning wood, I pack my Mora.

But....

I carry an Opinel in the woods with the confidence that I could get through an unexpected night in the woods and batton wood for a fire with the Opinel if I needed to. They'll definitely take the punishment if you are smart about it.

The only downside to battoning with an Opinel is long term wear and tear. Eventually, the impact loosens up the peened pin and inner collar a bit. It's easily fixed at home by re-crimping the inner collar and repeening the pin with a few taps.

People I've talked to who've used the Svord Peasant report that it's even better at battoning. I sort of see the Peasant as a fixed blade with an extendable handle though.

I assume those insanely overbuilt customs from the likes of Crusader Forge and Medford would be up to the task, though with what you're dropping on one of those I doubt anyone's about to try it.

I have done some light batoning with a Cold Steel Large Voyager - even with the strong Tri-Ad lock I didn't feel very comfortable doing it... I'll stick with a fixed blade.

You can baton a folder without the lock engaged (blade hanging) and it doesn't put any stress on the parts that would fail, just jumble the pivot up a bit but I think most folders could handle that.

I've done it in a pinch with both my Cold Steel Spartan (a few times actually) and my ZT 0350  I carry my BK2 in my EDC bag now so I no longer need to worry about that.

If I had to make a recommendation I'd say the Spartan. It can take a pretty hefty beating.

Found it.

Problem solved... ;):D

There is a youtube video where a Cold Steel Pocket Bushman is destroyed by batoning. But it was blade failure, not the locking system as I expected.

Use the folder to carve a wedge. Cut a small groove in the wood you are trying to split and then use the wedge to split the wood. If the wedge breaks then carve another one. That is how you baton with a folder.

Actually never heard this advice before! I think it is great advice!
