Is there any interest in custom made knife display cabinets?

Kevin, yours is VERY nice as well, Mine is not a knife room but a man room, Multi-media and my knives. I keep it locked so the grands can not get in. Grandchildren as young as mine do not do well with sharp pointy things.:)

Thanks James. I call it a knife room but I do have some other knick-knacks there as well. My knife/gun books an Elk and Moose trophy and a gun or two. No grand kids yet but everythings very locked and protected.

That case is also built into the wall isn't it Del?

Wow! That is quite an impressive collection of D 'Holder knives.

Kevin, I really like the way you have yours laid out. I like how each knife is presented a little bit different than the others.

Ok, so I think the general consensus seems to be that if you're going to display your knives you'll probably display all of them. I guess I never realized how many of you guys had such large collections. It makes sense though. My collection of customs is small (only two right now) but I've got two on order and and three more I am trying to talk the makers into making for me. In ten years who knows how many I'll have. I know I'll never sell any so in all likelyhood I will end up with quite a few. I hope so anyway :D

I'm going to put some ideas together and try to come up with some concepts for a couple of different sizes. I think I can do better than any I've seen so far.
I will still build my original idea which is a display that will highlight one or just a few special pieces but I realize now there is a demand for something to show off an entire collection.

Thanks for all of your input everyone.

What do you guys use "off to shelf" (from Home Depot, etc) to display them.. I know it may not be a perfect solution, but just wondering.. If I need to start this in a different thread, let me know..

Hey Del,
Sorry I missed you guys in November. Are those all D knives? What's the story with the similar looking knives in the upper left? Are those a series or something?
Best regards,
Allan

I wouldn't say that. I like your idea of a display cabinet with storage spaces. Changing the displayed knives sounds good to me.

Del,

That is an amazing set. I should have checked your site first for my answer. But I have been there many times and I didn't remember such a page. Anyway I am impressed!

I saw D in Pasadena last weekend and bought my 11th knife from him. Did you go to that show?

I do plan to go to D's this year if invited. I really looked forward to last year's, but an urgent business situation came up at the last minute.

Best regards,
Allan

This is something I've gone around and around on. So far, aside from a few pieces that have been displayed on stands or individual cases, a large hunk of my collection is stored in zipper cases in a closet. Obviously this is less than ideal and I've been looking for a way to display/store a good number of knives.

I've looked at the Gerstner chest set that AG Russell sells, but I don't want everything tucked away in drawers. I've looked at curio cabinets, but I wouldn't be able to fit everying in a single cabinet and I don't have room for more than one.

My current thought is a custom built cabinet - with the bottom 2 1/2 -3ft being lockable drawers, then another 3-3 1/2ft of enclosed glass shelving on top. This would give me storage for my collection on the bottom and a nice display setup that I can rotate knives in and out of.

On another note - I've started becoming a little more cognizent of how my knives are going to be displayed when I order them. One way I think knife makers can add value to their knives is to do some kind of complimentary presentation stands/boxes/etc. A really good example of this are the very cool book vaults that Bruce Bump did for some of his cut-n-shoots. Daniel Winkler did a very cool rustic wood & antler display for a knife tomahawk set I have. Tom Ferry did an excellent buckeye burl & blackwood box for one of the Japanese style folders I got from him recently.

Besides making the knives very easy to display, the displays are also very complimentary to the knives.
