Also they are invariably more money. Which I thought about and put in afterwards. But your point is well taken. Even in places where it is not against the law to carry weapons for self defense, it is often taboo to have a knife for that purpose.
Which is sort of this? They're not that popular, but an ulu has similar handle shape so maybe there's something you could work with there. I have a mini ulu a knifemaker over on BCUSA sells to try the concept, and I didn't like it. It didn't have a typical ulu handle though, and used the sheath as the handle. It was just okay, but no better than any other knife, IMO.
If it interests you enough, maybe get a cheap one and try it out. Figure out what it can and can't do. I suspect you'll get mostly theoretical reaponses here, inculding from me as I don't have one and certainly never used it for mock survival/woods uses. Cold steel should have something.
For skinning game, it's not so complicated that most knives can't do that job, some are just a lot better at it. The firesteel thing is a non-issue because you just need a sharp spot somewhere yo throw sparks, so sharpen the spine yourself, carry it striker, carry a lighter, or some charcloth and make sure you can generate sparks with the blade.
Understand, people can die from exposure far before the lack of food so skinning is pretty low on the needs for a survival use of knife. Being able to get a shelter fashioned quickly and then fire would be higher priority.

Hello,
I recently got to admire how my ordinary 3 inch blade fixed knife excels at concealed carry and I am currently considering buying a new knife.
My current experiences led me to consider buying a push dagger because of its ease of concealment and tactical capabilities, but I also need a blade that can do basic survival stuff such as skining game, making fire with firesteel etc... So basically something small, but not so small that it can't be used efficiently against bad guys and preferably something that doesn't have sharpened edge on both sides of the blade and also has good ergonomy so it is enough in a survival situation. I would be happy if the price was under 200 dollars and I don't care about the type of steel if it is processed properly.
What would you recomend for me?
