Recommendation? Is there any push dagger that can be used in a survival setting?

But your point is well taken. Even in places where it is not against the law to carry weapons for self defense, it is often taboo to have a knife for that purpose.

Also they are invariably more money. Which I thought about and put in afterwards.

So my example was the benchmade socp.

Also why I think all that back of house concept is important. Because it can be all so obtuse.

They're not that popular, but an ulu has similar handle shape so maybe there's something you could work with there. I have a mini ulu a knifemaker over on BCUSA sells to try the concept, and I didn't like it. It didn't have a typical ulu handle though, and used the sheath as the handle. It was just okay, but no better than any other knife, IMO.

If it interests you enough, maybe get a cheap one and try it out. Figure out what it can and can't do. I suspect you'll get mostly theoretical reaponses here, inculding from me as I don't have one and certainly never used it for mock survival/woods uses. Cold steel should have something.

For skinning game, it's not so complicated that most knives can't do that job, some are just a lot better at it. The firesteel thing is a non-issue because you just need a sharp spot somewhere yo throw sparks, so sharpen the spine yourself, carry it striker, carry a lighter, or some charcloth and make sure you can generate sparks with the blade.

Understand, people can die from exposure far before the lack of food so skinning is pretty low on the needs for a survival use of knife. Being able to get a shelter fashioned quickly and then fire would be higher priority.

Which is sort of this?

Huh, that's something... Suppose that could work once you learn how to use the handle like that.

Not quite like an ulu, of course, as an ulu has the edge 90 degree from the handle, much like a round knife.

One like the grohman style is what I was thinking of that kind of has the push dagger handle style on an ulu blade. I didn't like the shape for field tasks that required force into the blade unsupported. Great for slicing. I'm sure it could be done learning how to get things to work, but it felt a lot like trying to use a thinner hawk for slicing tasks like some experienced bushcrafters can do. It's just not for me though and I prefer a traditional styled knife.

Thanks for your recomendations and opinions. I will take everything into consideration. The ESEE tertiary looks very promising for my purpose. I am also thinking about buying some spear pointed knife such as TOPS missile strike or Benchmade SOCP dagger, but these are essentially full on tactical dagger that can be more difficult to conceal. Do you have some spear pointed recomendations in the 3 inch blade knife category? The tactical use is not self defense in the general kind of sense, but more like full on panic mode combat use, so slashing with ulu knife or something like that isn't a viable option, if you know what I mean.

One I have been eyeing off is the demco armager. Which you can pick up relatively cheap. I have the freereign which I really like.

I have the training version of the half breed. And it does a few things well.

That flattish ring and the little sub hilt thing are quite clever.

Hello,
I recently got to admire how my ordinary 3 inch blade fixed knife excels at concealed carry and I am currently considering buying a new knife.

My current experiences led me to consider buying a push dagger because of its ease of concealment and tactical capabilities, but I also need a blade that can do basic survival stuff such as skining game, making fire with firesteel etc... So basically something small, but not so small that it can't be used efficiently against bad guys and preferably something that doesn't have sharpened edge on both sides of the blade and also has good ergonomy so it is enough in a survival situation. I would be happy if the price was under 200 dollars and I don't care about the type of steel if it is processed properly.

What would you recomend for me?

I will continue to take the position that knives are a terrible idea for self defense because they don't have stopping power and they cause serious damage which can get you in trouble with the law. Real life isn't like the movies. In reality, people describe being stabbed as feeling more like they got punched, and they often don't even realize it happened until after the fight.

If your main concerns are

1. Having a "get off me" weapon

2. Having a utility blade

Then I suggest that you use two different tools. Carry a knife for utility purposes and carry a separate tool for self defense.

I recommend a small flashlight with a tail switch. You can shine it in the eyes of an opponent to make it difficult for them to attack you, and you can strike them with the hard end of it. A flashlight will never be perceived as dangerous and will never be confiscated as such, and won't get you into any trouble. I bet you could even find a flashlight or two with a glass breaker on the end, in case you really must have something pokey.

Liked your post just for that. I love that guy's content.

It sounds like you would do well with a Benchmade 530. Its one of my EDC’s although I have not done much skinning with it but it has never let me down. If you cannot find a 530 I think a mini SOCP would do the job.
