Does anyone else know of anyone else making the kind of knives like Fred Perrin? He is famous for the la griffe and the obsolete spyderco fixed blade but his real specialty is OSS based tiny self defense blades. Some of his knives are modeled after the lapel daggers of the world world two era, He also uses push pins and bodkins. Are there other people out there who love this stuff but are frustrated at the lack of avaliability of these kinds of blades?

Peter Atwood makes small blades similar to Fred Perrin.

Also check out Graham Knives.

Hi,

I love Perrin's work! :)

I noticed on BladeArt that Warren Thomas produces some blades designed for similar use. I realize that it's difficult to compare such high level makers, however there are some similarities.

I once spent some time researching photos of the old oss knives, One of the things I found was this leather case called a blade kit, it contained a collection of knives, spikes, daggers, lapel and thumb knives, bodkins and ring knives. Wouldnt that be something for someone to make or for most of us to buy. Laci szabo makes something like it with collaboration with James Pioerk called an urban survival kit, it is different in that the kit contains in addition to a small blade various other components like multitools and so on.

One thing I like about Fred Perrin is the rawness of his knives. The look so artistic and primitive at the same time. Love it.

Have you seen the HideAway Knife? Also check out Mickey Yurco's work.

Edit: also, modern lapel dagger.

I saw the Hideaway Knife a while back, but noticed that most of them seem to be very hawkbill or recurve focused. He doesn't have enough straight edged models to suit me.

I also note that the models start at $139 for S30V and $189 for Ti... Isn't that just a BIT steep for such diminunitive knives? Where is the justification for that? It's just S30V, ya know...

Also, some of the "collaboration" models are shown in photos on the "What's New" page, but they are not mentioned on the "Models" page -- does that mean they're not available for purchase?

I know what you mean about his rawness, have you ever used one of his custom knives? Everybody saids this or that knife cuts like a lightsabre but I had this little green cord wrapped baby bowie of his, and it WAS a lightsabre. Has anyone else read about how into self defense he is? It is fantastic, he carries a first aid kit with blood coagulants, he wears arm pads and shin pads under his clothes when he rides the subways in paris!

Paris is just about in flames. I'd be wearing more than what you say Perrin is wearing, if I were going to ride the subway in Paris.

(Um, actually, I don't think the subway is running in Paris at the moment anyway, making it a moot point...) :p

walkabout I see what you mean by Warren thomas, what great stuff, definitley along the same concept lines.

Peacful jeffery yeah the situation is crazy, but i guess it has been pretty bad for sometime, Perrin talked about how gangs fishhook a victim catching someone in the cheek with a fishhook then dragging them down and clobbering them. I think that is why so much of his stuff evolved into conceable self defense bladeware, I read that his lagriffe idea originally came from a cheap skinner, He is big on using stuff from hardware stores, have you ever seen his stuff with the heat shrink electrical tubing for handles? I have used the same stuff for homemade stuff, all you have to do is put a hair dryer on it and it conforms to any handle shape, it cost nothing and can be found in any hardware store.

All it takes is the one straight basic model for there to be as many straight edges as you need.

Oh, "He" is very definitely 'she'. :)

Read here for the Utility Hideaway in 440A for half that price.

Price is rarely a function of size as much as the exigencies of manufacturing, marketing, and availability.

The models are the basic formats. Since the actual knives are ground by actual and different knifemakers, they are all collaborations and all potentially unique.

Thanks for the suggestion about the Hideaways, the whole thing just seems a little too business savy for my taste, also the ordering process which I guess is geared for zero surplus seems to be a hassle. I agree with the price point, the Hideaway is about marketing and making money, there is no heart and soul in it?

Maybe you have to see one to believe it. It is NOT just about making money, although I hope the business makes enough to continue! :D

Deathhead, have you heard that perrin uses a forge for making his blade? Not the usual stock removal?

The artists that make them, they have to be beautifull, but dont you get a little too much of a commercial vibe off the whole operation?

Hi !
At the end of this month i will participate to a Self Defense stage with Mr Perrin. There will be some knives too :D ;)
The new design from Mr Perrin is the Shark, which can be considered as the "ultimate" evolution of "la griffe" in terms of efficacity, lightness,...

vince-corto wow what do mean what is a self defense stage? where can we see the shark? are there pictures available, if you see him tell him I said for him to put his blades together in a system that you can wear under your jacket, The shark as the centerpiece but a harness rig including pins and ring knives and little lapel knives or whatever else he thinks is right including a pouch or pocket for first aid. And tell him to make it affordable! Will you?
