Is there anything a $400 to $600 knife can do that a $100 Knife can;t"

You won't truly know until you own one. It's something you have to experience to understand.

With out getting catty, this. Just handling a higher end blade will give you a better appreciation of the price tag in most cases.

I could be very satisfied carrying Spydercos or maybe certain Benchmades in the $175-range. OTOH, I have carried knives for the last four years that average about $400. Generally, my knives are good blade-steel, titanium scales and sized according to my hand.

Yes. But not necessarily.

A $400 knife is likely to have sturdier materials, better build quality, and last longer.

A $400 knife is likely to have superior steel that's heat-treated better, holds an edge longer, and is tougher.

A $400 knife is likely to be one that's made in more limited quantities and thus is more exclusive.

A $400 knife is likely to have had better quality control in manufacturing.

Yea i have a similar issue, any knife under $150 dollars turns to a pile of rust in my hand before i can use it. :p

You'll never attract high level women with a $100 knife. When you start getting over $400 then the 8's and 9's start randomly approaching you. Over $500 and you'll likely snag some 10's.

To me the more expensive knives don't necessarily do something the cheaper ones won't, it's doing the same thing for longer. Better blade steels hold an edge longer, a better pivot holds up without blade wobble, etc. Then again, sometimes it is just the looks, and feel, of a particular knife that increases the pleasure in using it.

No telling. One might suppose a LEO would want only top shelf. And rightfully so.Or a soldier. or a collector.

In my experience, many LEOs and soldiers want something particularly inexpensive due to the risk of theft, loss, or breakage. There are definitely exceptions, but that's the norm that I've seen.

This, is one of thee funniest comments that I've read, since joining BF! :D

Thanks for the laugh, Luke!

After looking at the prices on some highly priced tactical knives, I started asking myself what makes a knife $300 to $400 better than a $100 knife? For example, what makes a $450 Strider better than say a $100 Benchmark?

Don't ask that question around here...I made that same comment in another forum and have pissed off a lot of people for life in the process.

I looked up this question in The Powernoodle Book of Knowledge, and here is what I found on p. 1,483:

"For some guys - but not all guys - expensive knives are better at making them feel good. Expensive knives achieve this effect by distracting the guy from his crappy job and his 2001 Kia Sephia, and from the reality that he will never date Kate Upton, dunk on LeBron or be an astronaut. Depending on the guy, cheap knives can achieve this effect too. But either way, if a guy owns more than 3 knives its because he is trying to anesthetize himself.

Expensive knives are just pocket jewelry. They don't actually cut stuff better than less expensive knives. But for some guys, they can provide a diversion from reality that justifies the price."

LOL, Yeh she saw that $500 bulge in your pants. Thanks for the laugh!

Since $400-$600 knives are in question, what about a $601 knife?

Does the knife magically become superior to all things sharp at that point?

I'm thrilled with the quality and performance of my $90 Mainx2 (S30V) and my $110 Yojimbo2 (S30V). I'm also happy with my Umnumzaan which was roughly 5x the price. I think much depends on the manufacturer when considering how much you get for your money. IMO , $100 with Spyderco gets you more quality knife than from most other knife makers. And although I'm not a flipper fan , I feel that a $200 ZT gets you a heaping helping of good stuff as well that is a true bargain.

I've heard they're chick magnets....;)

edited to say Luke beat me to it LOL

In some cases, you may be paying for tighter tolerances and more hand finishing.

In some cases, you may be paying for exotic materials.

In some cases, you may be paying for the design and construction of a respected maker.

In some cases, you may be paying for exclusive materials and design features.

In some cases, you may just be paying for the name and logo on the knife.

It depends more on the knife than on the price range.
