Is there anything else like the Jenny Wren on the market?

There's a balance point between speed and mass. I think that the Winkler Sayoc is just about perfect. I don't feel like I have to swing it hard to cause lots of damage. Standing still, and doing a quick jab with the Sayoc can cut clean through a turkey breast. The weight is not difficult to control, change direction or stop.
OTOH, with something like the JW I have to swing with more muscle to cause the same damage. Sure, it's shorter, lighter, and has different geometry, but my point is more towards the weight and it's distribution.

A great hawk for running would be a JW with a full tapered tang, getting the weight down to maybe 15-16oz. A lighter handle material would also help, G-10 is heavy stuff. Maybe something like fiberglass reinforced nylon or paracord would help get it down a few more ounces.

There will come a point where it's too light to do enough damage. I don't know that number, but as it gets lighter, I think more of the weight should be in the head.

A few years back, someone here on the forums made a very thin, full tang hawk from a saw blade. At the time I wanted one, but I feel like it was probably too light, like fighting with a sharpened feather. I know it would cut, but more mass would cut deeper, IMO.

Hey Scouter,

Probably not quite what you're looking for (it has more of a contoured handle and a spike) but I figured why not share a pic of my Imp Axe. Overall it's a pretty compact and light-weight design, less than 12" long, 0.3" thick S7 steel, with a tapered and skeletonized tang. Carries real easy and packs a solid punch.

The Imp Axe looks like a great camping campanion! I sent you a PM with a few questions.:thumbup:

I agree, and that's basically where I'm looking now. I don't want to flat out copy the JW, obviously. and I don't really need all of those sharp edges anyway.

I've been considering the handle, and I agree that G10 probably isn't the best choice. FRN would be nice, but I don't really know anything about its availability. Paracord is only good if it's wrapped properly, but it's also plenty grippy and readily available. I had dismissed it before because there's more to go wrong, IME. I'll put it back on the list. Thanks

Thanks Tiburon - PM sent.

Scouter, don't count out a wood handle either. Wood is light weight (it floats!), strong, and beautiful. Paracord is always a great choice too due to its grip and its usefulness to have around. Finally, even a simple grip-tape wrap can be a good option where weight and bulk are a concern. Might not be the prettiest option but it works well and is cheap and easy too!

The only real issue with tape or cord wrapping is that depending on the dimensions it could make the handle feel bulky as it goes the whole way around. I don't want the handle to be overly thin, no matter what material I use.

As for wood, I was avoiding it for the same reason as I would like to go with stainless. I sweat a lot as a result of a heat causality I suffered in Africa back in '04. It's not an issue, normally, but I was able to make an S30V folder get minor surface rust even with daily cleanings later on in another desert and I killed a cell phone with sweat one winter because it was inside a shell layer. Like I said, a lot. It's very likely that this would take tape out of the running as well, for the sake of durability.

S30V is my top pick for now, as I have used it a lot and understand how it stands up, in case anyone was wondering.

Been through that one, but it was a good refresher. I just noticed I said weekend, by which I meant Tuesday and Wednesday, which is my weekend. Sorry about that... I am working on the drawings now. Nothing concrete yet, just sketches so far. We'll get there though...

Smallest they offer is the "Baby Goose Wing", which weighs 24 ounces. None of them really fall into "hawk" territory either, IMO either.
