Is there really any noticable difference between S30V and CPMD2?

Has anyone noticed any difference in use/sharpening between CPMD2 and S30V?

Because I'm hard pressed to pick a winner in performance based on my experience with my Paramilitary's, well besides the D2 tending to rust spot more readily of course.

I'm sure some of our better steel people here will have a more scientific analysis but I have a lot of experience on both of those steels. If I have to compare Spyderco's S30V against their CPM D2 for ease of maintenance and edge retention I doubt there is a significant difference. At least that is my experience. I do not lose my edges much on any of my knives so I have never really had to work on either for very long. I would guess the D2 will have a little better edge retention but I would be surprised if it's that much. Personally, as often as I touch up my edges I feel no measurable difference at all.

Corrosion resistance is a moot point for me because I live in a high desert. I think Spyderco's S30V is one of the best I've used.

Strangely, I think CPMD2 takes a finer edge than S30V.

that has been my experience as well.

i have always been able to get a better edge with d2 (be it cpm or otherwise) than with s30v.

i have no problems with s30v in general, but of all my knives, i find it most difficult to get an edge im happy with on s30v.

I concur ! That's exactly my experience as well. I rebevelled my CPMD2 Para to around 25-28deg inclusive. This is kept hair whittling sharp on just Carborundum Stones and a light strop, and is touched up after most work days using a Lansky ceramic "dogbone". This knife has been my full time EDC'd for about 6 months, used hard daily at work, and maintained well. This is the only knife I own which has not chipped during normal use. Ive had no rust issues either, it often gets used in food prep too because all my kitchen knifes are complete rubbish...

Lets hope we see some more CPMD2 offerings from Spyderco...
