I used satanite for the hamon,
Aldo's 1095
Didn't notice it until I hand sanded to 1200 then etched.
I went back to the belt @80 grit.
I went deep enough to grind my maker's mark off amd this remains.
Near the spine

It's not on the other side

its so hard to tell. every 40 or so knives, i seem to find "something" in the steel that looks like it should not be there. a sqiggly line, a small darker gray patch., a whitish blotch. they all look different. very discouraging. if it makes you feel any better, i just had this happen 2 days ago. i call it " varicose veins" lol. at least it "looks" like cracks. i have never seen anything like it. it was not forged, or overheated during ht. even worse in addition it was SAN MAI steel, and it costs alot more than 1084 ! i think i am going to bolt it to a 4 foot 2x4 through the handle holes and see if i can spike it into my old ford tailgate to see what happens.

Yikes, I'd be upset with that too!
Like you, I didn't forge, didn't overheat, even annealed and stress relieved. Afaik did everything right, quenched in preheated parks 50.

Did yours show up after etching?

no, i noticed mine at 1000 grit. it popped out even more once i buffed it. yours doesnt look bad. i hate having to decide "finish it or ditch it".

If you want to "Ditch it" I think I might know someone that would want it (wink wink, nudge nudge).

I could definitely agree that there might be some cause for concern on both knives.
Regarding Josh and the first photo, are you planning on bringing the finish back up at all?

What did you heat the Parks 50 to?
Room temp is supposed to be good for parks50

Yes I should have mentioned when I started these knives it was about 20 degrees out so I heated it up to around 70 I think.

Yes I was going to try to bring it back up again. I'll give it away if it still annoys me. :D
