Hi all, I'm very new to knives and just bought a kukri from a Nepal place. This knife is great however upon further inspection of the blade there is a little "something" near the spine. It's not deep at all, only the very very very tip of a pin can fit in it. I don't know if this will be a problem for the blade further down the road with use. What do you all think, is this going to become a weak spot etc? Thanks for your help!

Does it go all the way through the blade or is there any evidence of anything on the spine itself? It looks like maybe there was some pitting or other imperfection that the grinding didn't go deep enough to remove. I wouldn't think it would pose a serious problem but I'm no metallurgist, nor a Khukuri expert.

It is an inclusion in the steel and is common with that maker, as they don't QC for that.
As small as it is, it likely won't pose a problem, but it could at some point especially if it gets rust inside it and expands.

Bigfatts, no it absolutely does not go all the way through the blade, and nothing on the spine.

If this is pitting, Is there anything I should do for pitting?

Thanks Karda.

Last night I forced this patina on it, hopefully this will help with the rust. Or should I maybe put clear nail polish in that pit?

You have the right idea - nail polish - super glue. Something to seal the open space and keep moisture out.

Keeping it oiled like you should anyway will be your best bet. Like Karda suggested, it shouldn't be an issue, but its something to keep an eye on, especially during hard or regular use.

I wouldn't fill it as that can trap moisture and just help the rust. Keep it oiled and it should be fine. If it is pitting, it was pitting on the original piece of metal that they used. I believe they use truck springs that can be quite old and have a lot of rust. Most of it is ground off except that spot that was a little deeper. Or it could be an inclusion when the steel was made or worked in the fire. Either way, probably not an issue.

BTW, truck springs are 5160 usually and a good alloy.

FWIW I have a svord bowie with a few small inclusions. I haven't been very nice to this knife and they haven't caused any problems.

Hey Everyone, thank you for all the help! Not having a lot of disposable income, I bought this knife hoping it can be a "one for all". Next I'm going to try and make a Kydex sheath. I already stabbed through the sheath it came with on the first sheathing.

I wouldn't be to worried about it. What did you use to get the patina on your blade, mustard?
