Is this a good deal? Should I?

I was browsing craigslist today and stumbled across a deal on a Penn Tool branded 6x48 belt sander with a 9 inch disc for 50$. I needed a good disc sander so I went and picked it up. While I was there, I got to talking to the owner and he showed me another thing he had for sale that I might be interested in. We walked around to the back of his shop and he uncovered a Paragon kiln with a DTC 1000 heat controller. It was in decent shape and he said he would sell it for $100.
I know people have used kilns to do heat treating in the past but is this a good deal? I have a forge but no precise way to monitor temps. It uses 220 and is so large I wonder if it isn't overkill for doing knives.

Well Paragon is still around building ovens/kilns so it's probably worth checking out what info they have on that unit--but if it's a largish kiln with a digital heat controller, it is most definitely a good price if it is functional.

I would like that it runs off of 220 personally--probably more efficient getting to temps we need for heat treating.

Yeah, I'm wondering if it would be worth getting in order to dismantle and re-work into a smaller, more efficient knife heat treat oven. The firebrick and DTC1000 controller are worth 100$ I figure. I just don't know the feasibility of doing that project.

Dmelton, I probably wouldn't try to get it to 'shrink it down' but if it runs I would use it as is. Like a lot of things, you usually don't regret one a little too big, but if it's a little to small
