Recently there has been a thread here on doming pinns.
I want to give it a try and am looking for a good hammer.

Many, many tabs with a light and round faced hammer I understood.
Would this be a good one?

(22mm face, they also have 25, 28& 32mm)

Is it worth while it to pay double and get one from a gold smith supply house, or will a simple ebay-hammer do?

A simple ball pein hammer that most already have in their garage is perfect. Pein side ofcourse. You can get a small one at the hardware store cheap

I actually have that same one. It works well. Be sure to polish the faces to a mirror finish. That size will work well for 1/16" pins and 3/32" pins. 1/8" and larger I like to use a 6oz. hammer.

I pin knives almost every day. I use a 1-1/2 oz. flat faced jeweler/watchmaker hammer. I have a chasing hammer for engraving. I find it much too cumbersome for peening pins.

Also, drilling some small divots in a scrap of steel plate will keep the back side from flattening out. Just be sure to smooth and polish the divot. I've seen people use a hard wood as well, but I haven't. One other thing I do, if the assembly can go this way, is to peen one end in the vise before inserting the pin. I do this on straight razors, then just cut off the extra and file it flat before peening. I leave about 1/2 a pin diameter sticking up.

I've been on a doming quest lately, and am far from an expert, but I have had good
Luck with a punch that has been rounded like a ball pein. Lots more controll for me then the hammer alone. I got that idea from Nick. I use the same punch for tightening the fit on guards. That's how I'm doing it this week at least! I'm using a garage sale ball pein that's like 6 oz. to start it until I chicken out, then go to the punch.

If your sole intention is doming the pin head, you can just use a cup punch.
Domed pins are properly polished on a buffer after peining.
