Is this a good liquid nitrogen dewer?

So I just measured the one I got yesterday. Yes the total height is 22” but the useful height is more like 10”. A tape measure reaching straight down only goes down 18.75” from the top of the plug to the bottom. There is a tube at the top that the styrofoam cup lug fits in that is 8.75” tall so there is a maximum of 10” that could have ln2 in it. This will still do what I need and will send out any very large blades for heat treat anyway.

You don't need to have the blade immersed in the liquid. Some believe that's actually contrary to desirable (I think Peters has a LN method that makes sure there's no contact with liquid). But JT has shown the entire interior of the container is at cryogenic temperatures.

That's good otherwise we'd be refilling them every time we heat treated. Instead, you get the same effect whether there's 1" of liquid remaining or a full 10".

I found the 20 liter version of that container. With the following specs:

  • Brand: VEVOR
  • Condition: New
  • Material: Aluminum Alloy
  • Capacity: 21.6L
  • Mouth Diameter: 50mm
  • Outer Diameter: 386mm
  • Height: 640mm
  • Empty Weight: 10.5kg
  • Normal Storage Time: 172 Days
  • Number of Canister: 6
  • Depth of Canister: 111mm
  • Diameter of Canister: 35mm
  • Warranty: 2 Years
It looks like a good enough solution, unfortunately it seems the 2 inches neck diameter is pretty much standard. It complicates cryo of large blades, but the smaller necks will a least give you much longer storage time. My current 2.5 inches Taylor Wharton LD25 is rated for 109 days (0.23 liters/day) but usually it'll be empty in 60-70 days.

My 20L has a opening of 2-5/16” and a evaporation rate of .09L/day. I really love the long hold time as I do t use it all the time but it’s nice having it on hand. Where are you guys getting such good prices on your liquid nitrogen. I pay around $3 a litter from the local oxarc. We are a small town but I don’t mind driving the 1.5hrs to the city if I could get a better price.

I actualy find I get more efficiency out of my dewar once the level gets down a little ways. The foam cap also prevents air movement around the mouth. If oxygen gets down inside the dewar it will actual turn into a liquid. This is one big reasion you don’t take the cap off and blow down into the dewar. Not saying people do that but if your wanting the clear to fog so you can see inside you might be tempted to blow down inside.

Thanks. I was wondering about that! Good to know.

Thats right. Coldest bourbon in town
Hey that just gave me a idea. Can I make bourbon ice cubes for my old fashions? This thing is going to be fun. Gotta make sure it's a new one though. My cousin was filling them for some of the cattle breakers. He opened one that was empty and got hit in the face with white powder that smelled funny

That would be awesome! I make tomato juice ice cubes for my Bloody Marys... the bourbon cubes would be awesome if you manage to do it. The water might separate out though...

If using a flask to pour LN into, it is good to make a tipping cradle for the larger dewar. Trying to control a big dewar and a flask at the same time is an invitation for frozen toes.

Bourbon should freeze into ice cubes evenly because it happens very fast. I would place the booze in a plastic ice tray and set it in a larger pan or small cooler. Pour the LN in so it goes under and along the side of the tray before covering it. Lift the tray out carefully ( it will be very brittle). Set the ice tray in a shallow pan of warm water and pop the booze-cubes out.

Pour the LN back into the dewar using a large metal wide throat funnel. They can be found in the home canning section of some hardware stores and at online canning suppliers.

Stacy I have the feeling you may have tried this once.

I have been wanting to get one for a while but now I know all kinds of other fun things to use it for it seem like a nececity. Heck it a supposed to make awsome ice cream too. Now I will be to fat and happy to go make knives. I just gotta make sure there is no leftover old bull semen in mine.

Knowing Stacy, he used a single malt scotch.
