Is this a good or silly idea?

I was thinking of cutting a credit card piece of one of these flexible cutting boards out and carrying it in with the credit cards. Use it for a backing for cutting to keep from ruining edge by cutting against hard surfaces.

That make any sense?

Not necessary. If you're in a restaurant, for example, and want to use a good knife of your own to cut a steak, instead of cutting against the ceramic plate, toss the steak in the air, and slash bite-size pieces off it!

I think I understand what you are saying but it does not seem practical. unless you mearly mean utalizing it as a mini portable cutting board. any other use in my thinking anyway would put your off hand in danger of being cut. if I am not making sense offer up some examples you have thought of.

rackness, I wasn't thinking of HOLDING the thing. Put it on the table and cut on it. Not at a restaurant though. Ya GNAW at restaurants.

More like at POOL TABLES. When you want to shorten a cue and psyche out the hoodlums at the same time.

:D

If someone knows their knife well enough, they should be able to feel the bottom of the steak before the cutting edge touches the plate.

You could put a little rubber backing on it so it does not slide around.
It is kind of a silly idea though. You could just sharpen your knives once in a while.

I understand what you want to do, but in the scenario above, it would ruin the "intimidation factor". The hoodlums would be laughing at the cutting board instead of being intimidated by the blade.

Hahhaha! Yeah I agree with knarfeng. I laughed just thinking about that scenario!

someone used to sell a combo of a victorinox paring knife in a back pocket sheath/portable cutting board. I think it was sheathmechanic, but the site is gone.

I still fail to see the benefit of such a devise. unless you are using it for field food prep and for that senario I would bring a larger roll up cutting board.

I don't see the need to use my quality knives to cut my steak at the local outback, their knives work just fine and it saves me from undue sharpening.

how about supplying some use ideas that made you think this up.

The responses have pretty well addressed the original post and it appears to be falling slightly to the "silly" side in the polls.
