A guy at a local used equiptment shop has a 30 ton H-frame hydraulic press for sale. It comes with the hydraulic unit with a 3-phase motor but he may have a 1-phase one laying around, He is asking $400.00 what do you think? It is about 7 feet tall and weighs about 500lbs + /- .. I would really like a press, I hope that this would work  ...

Louis, that sound like a deal. Got a pic of it???? The single phase is the way to go. What's the stroke lenght?????? Is it 2 stage pump?????

Sounds like a great price to me! I have been priceing parts out and the hydraulics are pretty expensive. If you let 'er walk let me know ;)

Louis, is this a bearing press? Like one of those with the adjustable height lower crossbeam?

If so, they tend to be a little lightweight for doing damascus work. They're "rated" for 30ton but they can't stand the kind of repetitive force forging presses create.

Fitzo, yes it is a large bearing press. It is pretty solidly built, but if the bottom brace is too light weight I could easily weld a solid cross member in it's place. IG, as far as the stroke and 2 stage pump I'm not sure?? I'll have to check it out again..

Rocket,
As IG implied you want a two stage pump. If not I can't say it's a great deal. Especially since you may or may not have to buy a motor for your pump.
