Is this a quality control issue (Case Knife)?

I'm wondering if this is a quality control issue, or if I'm just picking nits that don't exist. I was just gifted a Stag Damascus Peanut (Case) and while comparing it to my CV Peanut, I noticed the pen blade does not sit as low in the handle when closed. Further inspection showed that the tang on the Damascus was wider than on the CV pen blade.

Please note that the blade point can not be felt when running your fingers along the handle when closed. My concern is simply that sharpening the blade will cause it to start poking out of the handle that much quicker.

Since this knife was a limited edition and produced in 2008, and since it was a gift, returning it for exchange is not an option. Would you send the knife to Case? Or am I being an idiot? It wouldn't be the first time...

To fix that pen blade, they need to remove some stock from the tang side (circled in red). Shouldn't be impossible, but I've never sent a Case knife in.

In green I've circled what appears to be the same coarse, unfinished edge that I've encountered on recent Case knives. Almost as if an entire step in the production process has been eliminated. That never should have gotten past QC either.

But the finish of the blade edge is really disappointing, especially considering the "fine-ness" of the overall knife and the m.s.r.p. ($118). It's as if the edge was shaped with a coarse grinder and never finished. Running a finger down the face of the blade catches at the edge, and the nicks are even visible to the naked eye. Don't know if this magnified scan captures the problem accurately. I'm really considering sending this pen knife back for a touch-up. Since I paid roughly $50 it's not a completely sour deal, but had I paid the entire $118 I'd be plenty upset.

I think the best option would be for you to send the knife to me to "Fix".
Overused jokes aside, i would carry the knife and not worry about it, Its a great piece you have there, and it looks completely functional from the pics

Looking at various pics on the web, every example I've seen has this wider tang. The knife is still completely functional, but it's just odd.

In any event, thank you for the feedback!

Great advice from Brets-ftw and Bob-W. Just a little at a time. It does not take much so do not take away too much before checking out the position.

I shot an e-mail, photos included, over to Case. I must say I am impressed with their customer service. I had a reply in a matter of hours from their chief engineer, no less!

His explanation as to the size difference is that the Damascus does not go through their polishing process, so the bit of metal removed during that phase of production is still present on the Damascus blade.

Just thought I'd share.
