Is this a real Mad Dog 1995 Vintage ATAK knife

The sheath and knife look correct to me.

But, importantly, ive never owned or held one. Just seen pics.

So I guess the best way to determine if it is real is to weigh the knife and sheath.

The seller is supposed to be sending a pic of a serial # I assume its on the spine as I don't see it on the right hand side.

I used to be a dealer for Mad Dog Knives back in the late 90's till late 2000 and quite honestly some better and more detailed pictures would really help.

Boru, here is a pic of a serial # on the spine and another pic I have requested some more detailed pics.
Thanks for your help.

Try and get a more detailed pic of the choil / plunge line area.

A pic of any other markings and the back of the sheath would be nice also.

After seeing the additional pictures I believe it's a real ATAK.

Mad Dog did have a rare "C" series Seal ATAK.

Could be one of those. There's a blurb about it here
(Link removed)

"We are not sure what “C.W.” means and Mad Dog cannot remember why he marked it that way but this is a real deal original 1993-1994 Vintage Mad Dog Knives SEAL ATAK. This knife is entirely hand made and in absolutely mint condition other than the typical black coating wearing off from taking it in and out of the sheath. The sheath is in minty new condition. As part of the package the buyer will receive the hand signed photo that you see in the pictures. This is a chance to own an original Mad Dog Knives SEAL ATAK that obviously has a story behind it along with some true character."

Riiiight.....
8k for "we dont know what it is," "entirely hand made(right)," "mint condition (apart from the coating)," "HAND signed photo (...of a knife, lol. Further more signed photos are quite often signed by hand)," "obviously has a story behind it (except for obviously having zero story at all)," "true character (read worn)."

Its been a while since Ive read so much bull in regards to one knife ....but hey, a bargain at a mere 8K.

What a gigantic joke. Its not even that I dislike the knives per se.

The prices are just silly.

Then again they sell, so there is obviously a market.

There is another one born every minute ....

I have purchased the knife and got what I think is a smoking deal, I weighed it at a UPS store the knife weighed 12.5 ounces and the sheath came in at 5.7 so not exact but very close and the scale is not made for small weights. I feel very good about the purchase and would like to get it authenticated if possible.

Thanks to the forum members who provided valuable information. Still interested in opinions on the knife.

Congrats that you got a smoking deal.
I hope its the real thing.
When you have handled it a bit, report back with your imoression.
Now go beat the snot out of it :D

I have a few questions on this one. If you start using it, you should notice the hard chrome under the black coating. Or possibly it may not be hard chromed and you should notice that. Since this one is coated my guess is that it does not have the hard chrome on it, which is a plus for you in my opinion. Definitely interested in your opinion after some use. I know the MD handle ergonomics was always some of the best.

BladeScout, the dude wanted info on a knife.

I pointed him to info on the knife. Info that can be found with a simple google search. Also gave him what info I can recall about the brand.

I don't care what the OP wants to pay for it... I don't care what price the market will bear.

"There's one born every minute..." ??? Quite a quote, and pertinent to a myriad of products.

OP, I hope you did indeed get a smoking deal, and I hope you enjoy your purchase to the fullest.

.
And thats fine:thumbup:

I only have an issue with the silly price of 8k for one of the knives in the link (not the one like the OPs)

I suspect that the OP really wanted a Mad Dog and thats also fine.

We cant really discuss it but I further more strongly suspect, that the OP didnt pay no 8K for his or hers knife.

You are probably very safe, shipping scales are always a few tenths off. Congrats on the knife man, can we see some more nude photos of it LOL.

Yes I will try to put up more pics of it today but I don't have a great camera.
As to the price I paid it was under $8k by quite a bit.
I am convinced it is the real deal I can feel the quality of the knife. It locks into the sheath with a pop as the Kxdex springs back around it, the weight is correct and the snap and rivets are non magnetic.

Edgedspecialites dot com is great source of info about MD. I had few pieces in hands, nice tools but I don't get why people want to pay for them even few thousands of $$$.

They are collectible and rare, that makes for high demand and high prices.

The few Mad Dogs I have seen were all well used, unlike many other "collectible" knives. The well used knives had no visible flaws, other than worn surfaces

Mad Dog's heat treatment might have been suspect.

His spec-ops/CIA child stories might not have been true.

His diva blowup here, and his tactical forums bs exist for the world to see.

But he could grind a knife. Mad Dog was, and is, a legit high level artist. Maybe that's where the craziness came from, but that ATAK is pure functional art.
