Is this a serious price?

The Karen Hood Chopper. Here's a neat looking large fixed blade from CRKT I thought. It's quite obviously "inspired" by Ron Hood's designs, still made by Buck. It's a production 1095 knife with a nylon sheath. It also has an MSRP of $375.

Definitely go with a custom for that price, or even 100 dollars less.

The MSRP price is almost moot considering a smart shopper could find a new one for about $150 less. Big enough of a difference to skew the perception of worth.

For that much you can get a great blade from some bladeforums knifemakers

I just found it for $225. Not a terrible price, but lots of good options in that price range. Good looking knife though, Not sure how I feel about the big giant holes in the handle, however.

For a hard use chopper? No thanks.

I made my chopper .280 at the spine 11in tanto blade convexed edge made from a massive draw knife.

Yeah, I would like to know what the premise behind those holes is. I am guessing makeshift spear, who knows
Speed holes. Reduce air friction so you can chop faster.

Meh, sentiment aside, Not for me. Can it measure up to an ESEE Junglas? As for what your getting with each, I don't think so.

My bet is to throw the weight forward on the blade. That said, people have added speed holes for absolutely no reason at all.

My opinions on the knife- its too expensive and has a very similar profile as the CRKT Onion Redemption...which makes me question how much input Karen actually had.
The ESEE Junglas and Becker BK9 are the poster children for production choppers. Cheapest I found Hood's knife is at 220 with that garbage sheath. The Junglas comes in around $170 with a very good factory sheath.

The holes wouldn't bother me unless they caused hotspots, as many large, full tang knives have a lot more metal than that removed beneath the scales (BK9 is a good example), but I wouldn't pay that price for that knife.

I suspect the holes are to take some weight out of it.

The shop price probably represents closer to its worth.
I've lost conviction on this scale/style of blade as for the many I've tried they just aren't good at anything. Not good choppers, not good cutters and too big for finer stuff. They can do it but poor at everything. The Junglas is likely to be better as it is now the benchmark for this class of knife.

Thread needed a photo.

I wouldn't buy it. Not at any of the prices listed anyway. $125-140 is where it ought to be in my opinion. Unless it's coming with premium accessories or something.

I actually like the design save for the holes. Not a big fan of recurves, but it is mild. The Junglas is certainly better. But what is it about this class of knives you do not like? And what do you prefer?
