No idea, up until 4 years ago I never heard of burl wood, but I did see a TV show last year about a guy running around California cutting down trees just like that and calling them burls

Also since that time I have spotted a bunch of tree's in my area that have a similar look

I've seen quite a few trees in my neighborhood have bark curling like that. I sure was there when 2 of those trees were cutting down. No burl, nor any tight figures.

Yes, that is burl. Actually, it is tumors growing on the cambium of the tree.

The best burls for knife handles comes from root burls, but there can be some really tight curls in a trunk burl.

To harvest that you would have to cut down the tree, cut it into sections, slice the outer part off in about 6-8" thick slabs, paint all cuts wwith a good coat of house paint, and let it dry for a year ( to start with).

To see if that would be worth the effort, you can cut off a good size protrusion somewhere (Make a "V" cut to remove it) and slab it up on the bandsaw. If the slabs look good, The rest will be similar.

I would contact Mark at Burl Source for more info and advice.

My opinion is that it is just small cluster burls. The figure tends to end once it reaches the trunk.
But I could be wrong. It might be treasure.

If that tree were growing on my property I would want to leave it there to enjoy looking at.
But then I enjoy that sort of thing.

I saw a couple of fallen pieces that I will go grab and cut up.. I am going to stabilize them myself so maybe they might be worth something?? Never know.. I will keep you all posted.. The tree is pretty well dead already as well... Only half of it is there
