Seller posted a knife for sale. I claimed it and pmd him immediately for PayPal info. He comes back a few minutes later saying he got a better offer and it would cost me another $50 to match. Bad form, yes. Acceptable behavior on bladeforums…you guys tell me.

Devil's advocate here, he said "Take", then pm'd with conditions. If someone else offered to take it without conditions (and at a better price), why not sell it to that person instead. Deal's not done until both people agree.

There were no conditions. I asked for his PayPal and additional pics. I didn’t stipulate I wouldn’t pay until the pics were delivered. Although it’s typical to let someone see the blade they’re buying. Oddly, his post included no pics of the open blade.

Doesn’t matter. Lying about a better offer and then playing auction games with someone “accused” of flipping isn’t appropriate behavior. He should’ve just said he didn‘t want to sell to him. Hell, just saying “I don’t like your face so I’m not selling to you” is better than lying about a better offer and trying to suck more money out of someone just because people send you PMs about flipping accusations.

Edit: Typo

Not an auction if it wasn't posted that way IMO. I can see why it'd leave a bad taste though

Auctions don’t need to be in the public viewed thread to be “auctions”. Sometimes people go to PMs to do it because they know it’s crappy behavior.

All good, as mentioned just playing devil's advocate.. At the end of the day, probably just easiest to move on and keep looking. Doesn't sound like it was meant to be regardless, and sellers can choose who to/not to sell to.

Completely agree with you there.

Exactly. Just straight say “I won’t sell to you.”
