Is this 'batoning' and firewood chopping with a knife a passing trend?

I consider myself a fairly experienced outdoorsman; mostly hunting and backpacking. I had never heard of batoning until I saw it on YouTube recently. This is a not a technique I would ever use backpacking; a knife large enough to baton with would weigh too much. I carry a very small knife to save weight.
 
To answer the O.P.; I hope so! Unless it is very light work like felling sub-3" trees, and some woodworking, it is simple abuse.
