Is this blemish acceptiable?

What is your plan for the knife? If you are going to use the heck out of it just consider that a starting point. If you want to keep it pretty then back it needs to go!

If your going to use it then forget about it. If it's a "Safe Queen" then return it.

Not picking on you or picking a fight, but your post was convenient...here's what I think. When I buy a new car, I *know* it will get scratched, dented, etc. But I want the new car to be new, even if it's just for a day. If I paid that much for a knife, I'd return it. Even if it's going to be a real user, I'd feel like *I* should be the one to put the wear on it.

My $26 Rat 1 didn't have any blems like that. Neither should your $500 knife. I'd show the whole thing and maker:) Anyone selling a $500 pocket knife (which blows MY mind anyway) should at least run it through QC once.

ETA: Tool marks, scratches, gouges, rough spots, etc. on anything above "utility" grade cutlery is unacceptable IMHO.

If it was me, I would send it back.
For me at least, I would always see the blemish when ever handling the knife, and always regret not sending it back.

As many have stated, I purposely didn't reveal the knife or the maker simply because I didn't want this thread to turn into a maker/manufacturer bashing thread. This particular knife is not a mass produced knife, it is considered a mid-tech and they are all hand assembled. IMO, regardless of the price or whether I'm going to carry and use it, I feel that the finish should be perfect. I was just asking for opinions to gauge whether I was over reacting in my disappointment of this knife.

Pretty much what everyone else is suggesting, exchange it. It's your hard earned money and deserve it.

If you bought a custom made, hand assembled knife from a non-dealer then you bought a used knife as it is only new from a authorized dealer or the factory.

I think the answer is easy, call the place you bought it from and ask for a new one with no flaws but do not expect any good customer service as he has probably been trying to get rid of it for awhile.

The knife is BNIB from an authorized dealer of this maker. It's not a second, or is it a used knife by any means.

There are a lot of comments on this forum about "you get what you pay for" or "you can't expect perfection from a $X folder". Yet you paid $500 and got a knife that looks worse than a $25 Victorinox out of the box. I imagine it bothers you or this thread wouldn't exist.

Send it back.
If you are not happy with it now, chances are you will not be happy with it in the future.

For $500, it had better be perfect. No excuse for a blem like that to be sold at full price. If/when you try to resell that knife, you will take a serious hit in order to sell.

Cairo...the point is...he doesn't WANT to show you the full knife. His option. Doesn't relate to the basic question.

I agree. That price should insure that you're getting a perfect knife. Def return it.

If it bothers you enough to post it, and obviously it does, then you will not likely be happy knowing it is there in the future. At least I wouldn't. I'd send it back IMO.

I started a similar thread over in the Traditional subforum. Bought a new blade from an AD that I loved, short of a cosmetic issue (one that could have become a functionality problem down the road, IMO). It's hard when you get a new knife that you're excited to carry, only to open the package and see something like that. Return it, OP. You'll be a lot happier when you get a perfect one in your hands. It's worth the short wait and inconvenience.
