Is This Common on GEC Knives with Jigged Bone Scales?

For the record. I've returned two knives to GEC. First was a 78 for the 10+ springs. I received the knife back door to door in under two weeks.

The second knife is the one I showere above. A 15 crown lifter. It's been with GEC for a little over a month. But I was told that their handle rework guy was out for surgery.

They have been great every time I call and ask them status. I would not hold this against them. I reserve the right to change my mind after 6 months though. Haha.

Good luck in what you decide to do.

Supratentorial, I'm dying to find a Case distributor that shows actual pics of new case knives. Haven't found it yet.

Why? Does anyone still collect Case knives? ;) (only teasing)

It does seem to be mostly a GEC dealer phenomenon... though it's sometimes carried over to other brands from these dealers. I do know of dealers that photo a single Case knife as an example rather than use stock photography from Case. I'd imagine that the major Case dealers have an enormous volume compared to the GEC production numbers and it wouldn't be practical to photo every single knife, especially the inexpensive ones. But it would be great.

Even so... the collector market has changed dramatically. If you can use Google or Bing then you can probably find a post or tweet or feed or photo gallery or video about anything.

Thanks for the clarification OneJim. Hope GECs jigging guy is doing well and your knife gets to you soon.

Take care guys

I am not a fan of spinning pins for this exact reason. I'd rather have hammer marks on a pin than have a spinner do that to a cover while rounding the pin over. That being said, this is fairly common when a spinner is used.

At what you paid for it, as a consumer, you have the right to expect a certain amount of quality. That is the downside of online shopping, you don't get to handle the knives first. However, I would expect that look on a knife with spun pins. In the end, it is your decision what to do.

Good luck.

Glenn

I have a few over spun pins. A few rough bone spots. On pick bone covers?

But none returned. The fit of the springs, covers and liners is of high importance to me.

Large gaps, poor/absent snap are higher on my list.

I have a few sunken pins, but really never have been bothered by them.

That pin is a spun pin, they're always like that. People don't prefer it sometimes I guess, it's been discussed. The bone on the pile side is something that I have seen on a couple knives. I don't think GEC considers it an issue, and I think most here would consider it a non-issue, but I understand why you aren't thrilled with it.

Sorry. I'm not seeing a big issue. Return it if you don't like it, so somebody with more realistic expectations can own it. But I certainly wouldn't send it to GEC for repair. There is no functional defect.

If you want near-perfect fit and finish on a production slipjoint, I can only recommend Victorinox. They make like a billion of the same basic pattern over and over, and have their patterns nailed after 100 years of refinement.

Small run companies like GEC don't have that luxury.

Good thing you're not a dealer then. Why not at least attempt to sound civil, the op is just expressing concerns and hasn't done so in a negative or reprehensible way that I've seen.

To the op: I just took a look at my GECs, and I think both your spun pin and jigging rough areas are worse than on any of mine. I'd notice them as issues, even if I planned to use the knife, because it seems outside of GEC's normal standards and therefore the quality I was paying for when I purchased it. If we all didn't care about quality we wouldn't buy GEC, let's let people express concerns so that lemons don't become more common. I am a huge fan of GEC and have had great service both for warranty work and in person, I wouldn't hesitate to contact them. Phone calls work best.
The issues you show are so ridiculously minor that if I were a dealer or manufacture, I would refuse to accept the knife for replacement or refund should you try to return it whether it meant losing you as a customer or not.
