Is this design crazy?? Maybe....think I'm calling it the Roadrunner!

Got a wild hair and wanted to do something a little crazy with a clip point. I might have overdone it a bit but I kind of like it.

Yes, the tip is going to be thin, but no thinner than say, a Spyderco Military, maybe a bit thicker even. It's not supposed to be a prybar, after all. Should slice nicely though. It probably won't need one of my swedge treatments either, gonna be plenty thin without it.

Anyway, this is the initial design with the initial bevel roughed in just to give me an idea how it's going to look. I'll have a few of 'em in my next batch for heat treat. After I profiled it and started grinding I kept looking at the wild clip and all of a sudden, something came to mind......

What do you get when when you take.....
One of these.....

Throw in this guy right here.....

Add a bit of this lunatic......

And then add some good 'ol Plymouth muscle.....

Well......you end up with THIS!...or at least I did :D

Let me know what you guys think. I'm going to finish a few of them up for the next show I go to and see what the response is.

Hi Jonny. Good for you trying more new models ! Have you concidered making the grind about twice as high? Frank

Hey Frank, maybe I didn't say it clearly enough. So far all I've done is set the bevel. At this point I'll get it heat treated and then I'll finish the bevels the rest of the way. You can see in my template in the first pic where I've got the grind lines drawn in. It should end up pretty much like that when it's done.

As far as new models go, it's always fun for me to sit with paper and pencil and come up with different stuff. Unfortunately you get bogged down with work, current orders etc., and sometimes I can forget to push things forward. I've been in drawing mode the last few days though and soon I'll have another design in the works called the Woodpecker, a spin off of this one.

Thanks for taking the time to check it out Frank! I appreciate it.

I know you have considered the very thin tip, but I have real reservations on it holding up on anymore use than slicing cardboard. I have made similar knives, and did not like the durability. The whole principal behind a drop point or spear point vs a clip point is supporting the tip.

It looks like the fingernail-cleaning tip on some SAK's. I modified the spey blade on a stockman to look/work like that, but I don't think it would be as useful on a larger knife. (my 2¢)

Thanks for the feedback guys:thumbup: I'll get some more pics posted as it progresses and we'll see how it turns out.

Jonny, visually I like it, it's different. But as it's been said, the point is a tad thin. Maybe find a way to put more meat on there. I'd say with a spear point but that may be TOO different. :o

I think it would be fine for general kitchen chores, or even tasks like cutting leather, but I don't see it as a self defense blade, or for heavy utility work. It has a faint resemblence to a seax blade, it might be a good idea to examine the tip of a seax to look at the geometry (just a thought).

A more shallow (lower grind) with a secondary bevel may result in a stronger tip. What do'ya think?

Patrice and David, good points. The point was to do something different and fun, not to make a beefy hard use all arounder. I know its use will be somewhat limited, but I bet it will certainly do more than just cardboard ;)

Yes, Jonny, I missed that parrern and of course that's whatI was thinking off but far later than you planed for it. Continuing though, if you were to place a false edge on the upper grind it would immediately become a very wicked tactical. There would not be a need for a thicker tip at all or a design change. Frank

I like it very much, too. I also agree that I like the grind line raised up like on your paper template.

THis is kind of like a meaty bushy with a persian point. Sexy!

The face needs to be cut in filigree style, like Patrice does. Jess

That's a really cool looking blade though. I would remove the paint job, stone wash the entire thing and then put some toxic green and black handle scales on it and then you'll have a winner.
