I haven't really gotten any sharpening supplies yet, but I am doing some research. However, I found this thing in my kitchen, and was wondering if it has anything to do with sharpening a knife!
YUP! I'm over 60 and my parents had one in the kitchen to sharpen their knives. You put it on the counter with the knife's handle inside by the stone and draw the knife along the counter towards you. It would rub along the stone in the middle and sharpen the blade on one side. You would then repeat the process on the other side of the stone. The rubber acted like tires on the counter. I saw theirs a few years ago when they sold the contents of their home. I also used it a few times while growing up.
Me too Me too!!!! I can even remember my mother using it to sharpen her knives. But then she got 'modern' and bought an electric can opener that had one built into the back. Frightening when you think what that must have done to her knives.
But back to the rolling sharpener. It's a very easy-to-us sharpener that is still sold today in Dollar Shop types of stores, and if you don't really care how your edge is treated, it's a very down and dirty way to turn a very dull knife into one that is only partially dull but with lots of saw teeth to do the cutting for you.
