Is this how it supose to look

i try this after noon. but i dont know if it is suppose to look or not.
i was wanting to make some for a pummel .
now if its right then how do you clean it up, the dark lines.

Looks like you didnt get a good weld on it, unless you just havent ground in far enough.

Just a shot in the dark, but did you heat the cable up and then twist it tighter (as tightly as you can) before forge welding it together? That will take as much space out of the cable as possible and lessen those deeper un-welded sections.

What does the cross section look like?? it does not look like the welds were complete. If not then re-stack and weld again. Square up edges at weld heat and try to eliminate those strands.

You seem to have a lot of inlcusions in a loosely welded cable.

I never did cable damascus, but Jim Hrisoulas says the cable has to be completely degreased by boiling it for long time in lye and then furtherly twisted at a very high heat to make it as compact as possible.
