Is This Knife a Good Deal? Does Anyone Have One?

I saw this knife in the last Smokey Mountain Knife Works catalog and wondered if it
was a decent knife. It's an Uzi (that's good) made by United (that's bad), but it's blade
is 154CM stainless (that's good). It initially sold for $200+ (that's bad), but now is
going for $69. Is that good?

Thanks!

What's good about it being an Uzi? You don't seriously think it has anything to do with the firearms manufacturer, do you?

I don't know, but that handle has to be the must uncomfortable thing I have ever seen

For 70 bucks i think you can do much better. Go over to E-bay and look at knives in the $70 range.
Try KaBar Next Generation or RAT Cutlery or Benchmade.

I 2nd that...ebay's the place...and a benchmade would be better...that handle is funky as hell

To be honest it looks a bit like something designed to appeal to the mall ninja brigade. As the others have said, you'll probably get a better deal elsewhere.

I remember reading this knife was made in their Arrowhead Manufacturing facility near Knoxville,Tennessee.

I did have a chance to hold the knife, the handle was comfortable but the aircraft aluminium handles were oddly cold on the hand. From the picture,it's hard to see that there finely serrated edge along the spine.

At $70 it would consider it a bargain price for a knife with 154cm.

I really don't understand why this knife which retailed for $300 is just dropping in price so much.

Well I think part of the fun of knife collecting is trying things out for yourself. I have knives that I could'nt find any information on or got before I had ever heard of the internet and I really like them. I've also bought knives based on what I read or that other people have bought and found they just weren't a good fit for me.
I say if you like the looks of it and can spare the 70 bucks to give it a try then go for it. You may really like it.

I did a quick search and it looks like $70 delivered would be a more reasonable deal. Personally, unless the design just hits your interest button, I'd wait to see it drop some more in price.

The issue with the Uzi knives is that most of them were not selling well, so it appears Uzi are moving on to different designs.

Blade design looks OK to me. I have issues with the handle. Perhaps the knife could be re-scaled to correct the handle issues - it looks like it should be an easy mod.

That grip, and especially the sawtooth-type notching running back from the spine onto the handle looks like it would be just miserable.

Not really, but I have seen fairly decent knives with "Walther" and "Beretta" on them. I've even seen some decent ones with "Smith & Wesson" on them, but I confess when I saw "United" that I did a double take. With 154CM stainless, I'd probably buy the knife if I could be sure the steel quality was any good. I still don't know at which point it's better to have just carbon steel over stainless, since there are so many grades and qualities out there. I've just never seen anything made by United that I like. I imagine they import many of their knives, so I thought this might be a good buy.

to good to be true........the little voice says no , listen to to it

Hmm. Irrespective of the make, mates, the big question would be how good the steel is. If I could be sure the steel was decent 154CM, with decent heat treat, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Still, with all the little voices here, I'll save me pennies and pass on the knife. Thanks, all! Thanks Obiwan!

I thought you would want to know that the Uzi Heavy Duty Defender is one of United Cutlery's High end knives which are 100% American made.
