My dad came home from Belize yesturday with a gift for me from the jungle. He went where they do a lot of the carving and bought a chunk of wood from them to bring to me for knives. The guy told him it was mahogany but it doesn't look like any mahogany I have seen. It is looks and feels like ironwood so I was thinking it might be a rose wood. What do you think?

When I pan in and look at the pores in the grain it looks kind of open like mahogany would look.
Plane off a little or saw or file the end some and smell it. Some rose woods smell like roses when you cut them.
You could cut off a little piece and see of it floats. Many/most mahoganies would float I think. About all the rose woods would be so dense they would sink. Does it feel oily ?

Well that is about all I got for now. Let us know.

It looks like ziricoate to me. Black streaks that don't necessarily follow the grain.

That's some really bad condition dug fir. Send it to me, I'll dispose of it properly for you. No charge, cause I like you.
