Hello,

Let me start off by saying I'm a hobbyist knife maker with little experience, trying to learn more everyday. Hence this situation. I've made a few blades out of A2 and O1 and I wanted to try something different, so I purchased a piece of damascus. While grinding it is noticed a line down the middle of the piece as if it was not completely forged? I emailed the maker and they made it seem like it was normal and would be corrected during heat treatment?

Is this right?

Thank you.

Jesse

Where did you get it from? High quality Damascus is pricy generally between $50 to $100 per cubic inch.
That being said, the Damascus I make is considered scrap if it has any non welded areas, slag inclusions, cold shuts or anything else wonky.

There are no weld flaws that are corrected during heat treat. Got a picture of this line?

Pictures would be helpful, as we have no way of knowing exactly what you're seeing. That said, if the material is truly separated/not welded at a certain point inside the blank/billet, I'm not sure why the maker thinks heat treat will solve anything...

Different people have different standards for what damascus is. Someone like Devin T, Alpha supply, Alabama or members of the forum like JT here wont sell any stock with weld flaws, cold shuts or decontamination.

When you buy cheaper stock, you run the risk of these issues.
