Is this scroll saw sufficient for an occasional cutting of billets?

Hi everyone I just wondered if you could very kindly answer a question I have about scroll saws. So I'm thinking of investing in a scroll saw for my leather work to make sheaths. However I am starting to dip my toes into the world of knifemaking as well and would this be able to cut knife billets to shape before I hit the grinder? I won't be doing it that frequently so I don't really want to blow the budget that I could be saving to buy materials and other tools if I can.

Thank you very much for your help! :)

No. Scroll saws are for wood.
Get a portable bandsaw or a Harbor Freight 4 X 6 bandsaw for metal.

Thanks guys :)

In that case I think I will build up on my budget and buy a bandsaw to do the job properly.

Thanks again!

Many people (including me) use the hf portaband. Get some good bimetal blades for it and you'll be set.

Don't forget to add the 20% discount coupon to any HF order - they are available most everywhere. Even an on-line search will turn them up. I'm sure sad they dropped the 25% coupon {g}

Fantastic! Thank you all very much. Looks like I'll be joining the big boys making the knife, handle and sheath soon! :)

This isn't a great pic but I think you'll get the idea, portable band saw and I rigged a mount then use a wood clamp to hold the trigger, or use a momentary foot switch and tie wrap the switch on. I used a 1/8 piece of Aluminum plate and made a small table to cut on.

Ah yeah that's what I had in mind :) I ideally would like to move about the piece of metal that I want to cut rather than the blade so I'll give that a go!
