Is this stuff too thick?

It's not so much that Aldo "oversizes" stuff... it comes that way from the rolling mill so that once you get rid of the scale you have the thickness you need. Especially since you're working with hand tools, next time you order, call and ask him to surface grind the mill scale off for you. It only costs a few bucks and saves a heckuva lotta time

Thanks for the tip!

That is a good recommendation to go with a dial vs a digital. It is easy to read halfway between hash marks so 1/2 of a thousandth is readable. Comparing to a caliper of known accuracy is a good idea as well.

Good idea to verify accuracy.

I have had a bit of hesitation getting something that requires accuracy from HF, but you guys seem to be sold on these, so I will give them a shot.

There's no HF here.

The ones I have are sold by a local machine tool supplier (at a higher price) and are exact duplicates to that photo

With the HF warranty, I wouldn't hesitate to try it.

I don't often buy a calipers, but when I do, I buy HF. :D

Really though, they are nearly as good as the German ones we use at the factory.

Jemblade,

The reason for the thicker stock is because I make it so. In spite of the smooth finish on our steels there is still a decarb layer. We typically have our steels rolled 15 to 20 thousanths thicker then actual size.
1/8" (.125) is rolled to .140
5/32"(.156) is rolled to.180
3/16"(.1875) is rolled to .205
1/4" (.250) is rolled to.270

The Steels we source from Crucible through Niagara Specialty Metals are rolled with a range do to the fact that they hand roll there products. A sheet of 1/8"(.125) can range from .140 to .156. In a 500 pound lot of say CPM154 you can end up with about 13 sheets and not 1 of them will be the same as the next do to the fact that they are finished 1 at a time.

Aldo, so can you have the steel surface ground to the dimension that is needed? Understandable that there will some variation but many of us do not have surface grinders.

Aldo. Thank you for the reply. I'll keep that in mind. I'll just do some draw filing over the whole surface to get through the de carb. My question would be how do you know that you are through the de carb. Once I hit shiny metal, am I there?

I think I answered my own question. Did a bit of draw filing and sure enough I hit shiny metal and the file really started to bite in. With the de carb it pretty much skated.

Right. You'll know when you're down to fresh clean steel :)
