Hi Guitarhead,
Welcome to the world of knives.
For some reason, knives are unique in that there are few "ultimates" that can be agreed on by all. There are so many variable in the different areas related to a knife, (steel, geometry, hardness, toughness, corrosion resistance, blade shape, handle shape, history, knifemakeing, etc) that the more you learn, the less you know and the more you wonder. You can speculate. You can focus on certain functions and get a narrower group, but in the end; "We are all teachers and we are students".
Many do lab tests; cut rope, cut thread, use CATRA, but none seem to agree on absolutes. "gouping" the steels helps some, but even the groups can vary, with each tester claiming their "truth" is the "truest".
In the end, long term real world testing and use will give the best information. But Speculation is usually because of the "newer" steel developments and comparing those that have been around for a while.
These days, the foundries are competing; "my steel can jump higher and run faster than your steel". Steels just get better and better.
"All good, just different".
Enjoy the dialogue. This is a good source of information. Lotta knife afi's here (aficianados), lotta steel-heads. (steel junky's)
Soak it in. Share your thoughts and take in the thoughts of others.
