I have a large Bering chase out of the back wheel of a cat haul truck. It will rust and I'm thinking it may be similar to ball Bering steel ,any info would be helpful......thanks
Most bearing races I've spark tested looked promising.
What you have to watch out for are fractures throughout the race to begin with. You should forge a test peice and see how it hardens.
52100 is a VERY common alloy used in bearings, and perhaps the races also. So, there's a VERY good chance your bearing race is 52100 and would make a GREAT knife. Here's a most respected resource for HT'ing info - read this page, then at bottom see the link for 52100:
