Thanks WTB: there is an issue in that most marine lubricants have considerable amounts of lead in them. This ingredient is highly toxic to aquatic organisms. For example we can use Vaseline to lube uncooperative cam locks on discharge pipes when moving fish from tank trucks - - but could not use a marine lube with lead in it.

Ebbtide: good point. These would more likely be in Kydex or plastic sheaths.
All: thanks again folks, sounds like there aren't any major risks to the blade metal from a good coating of Vaseline.
