Is Western's W49 bowie a user?

Thread derail! I bought this one 15 years ago. It had been used, but not much. Whats the story on these? Ive had it stored in a gun safe since I bought it. Its a very beautiful blade, are they of quality components like the bowies?

Friends,

The last time that I was Waxing Nostalgic and Googling "Western Bowie", I came across a nice Machinist's Drawing that someone had made of one, showing critical dimensions at several strategic points.

I believe that the Western Bowie was the best Production Bowie ever made.

I know of a Custom Knife-Maker who is considering adding a custom version to his line-up.....

He's soliciting cardboard tracings from Lucky Owners.

I'd really like to turn him on to the Drawing.....

But I just can't seem to locate it.

I know that this Forum has a Huge amount of Knife Lore and Data collectively, amongst the Many members.

Can anyone direct me to the Machinist Drawing of the W-49 Western Bowie that I'm thinking of?

Many, many thanks!

.....RVM45 :cool::eek::cool:

Have him e-mail me and I can arrange a first-hand encounter with one.

That's a Western 46-8 . It was one of their premium models years ago. Handsome knife.

As for the Bowies? They're great too, worst that can be said about them is that the guard is too large.

I see it's going to be hard to find one of those. rare. Doesn't the blade look somewhat like a USMC K-bar?

Yes, it's basically a longer F-U style blade with a changed handle shape.

Western actually marketed military style version, the G-46 - 8 during WWII.

Yeah, it does have the lines of the k-bar. The "blood grooves" on this thing is probably 1/8 inch deep on each side of the blade. Whats the most appealing to me, is the fitment of the grip parts. There is absolutely no play between the grip and the guard, and each individual "ring" thats in the grip is absolutely seamless. IDK how these were made, but the final finish of the knife is awesome.
To be perfectly honest guys, if the OP hadnt started this thread, I would have probably never remembered that I bought this back in 1997. Thanks OP!!!!!

Now THAT is a military knife! I may have to look for one of these! These are a model I've not seen before, I appreciate the look-see. I love Westerns, W-49's especially. I have 2, one a carbon steel "M" coded WESTERN from 1991 (must have been one of THE last ones made by Western) and another one from a pawn shop in better shape I keep as a keepsake or collectible, since mine is still being used. Going strong since 1991, not a bit o' rust either, and holds a shaving edge.
